Three ring binders are just infinitely useful.  I’ve been using some form of three ring binder since I was in grade school.  The progression of the different types of three ring binders I’ve used more or less symbolizes the progress I’ve made in life.  In grade school, it was paper three ring binders.  High school and college I graduated to flimsy plastic three ring binders.  During my post graduate training, internships, and first few jobs I had entered the world of durable vinyl three ring binders.  Recently I have picked up my first leather three ring binder and I’m feeling like a real jet setter.  I suppose after leather three ring binders would come one made out of solid gold, but I’m not quite there yet.

In all seriousness, a nice leather three ring binder is a great thing to have on hand in your office, desk or home.  They come in different styles and shades, but I prefer the more traditional black, dark brown or navy blue leather three ring binders.  If you really want to get the message across that you’ve ‘arrived’ you can get a leather three ring binder with your name stenciled on it in classy silver or gold lettering.  My boss has one of these and I find myself gazing longingly at his leather three ring binder whenever I’m getting lectured in his office.

You can pick up leather three ring binders from a number of different sources today.  A lot of big retail outlets like Wal-Mart or Target will carry them, and they’re really not all that expensive.  For maybe just two or three times the price of an equivalent vinyl binder, you too can own your very own leather three ring binder and let the world know you’re on top of things.

A good futon can be the most important piece of furniture for a wide range of people, especially students or those living in small apartments.  In fact, the humble futon is perhaps the patron saint of the studio apartment, as it lets you seamlessly combine the bed and the couch.  The futon’s shabby cousins, the foldaway bed, the Murphy bed and the hide-a-bed couch all took a stab at blending the bedroom and the living room, but none of them have the ease or the elegance of the futon.

The New York studio apartment is a unique beast.  It’s much smaller and much more expensive than any of it’s studio cousins in LA or Chicago, generally forcing it’s sometimes grumpy, usually cramped occupant to spend her waking, home bound hours stuck in one room.  A good futon finally makes this existence a little more livable.  The studio dweller can spend the day on a comfortable couch, lounging about, maybe reading a book.  Then when it’s time for bed easily slide down the back of the futon and turn it into a comfortable bed.  All it takes is a blanket thrown over the top of it and it’s ready to go.

A futon mattress can really make or break your futon, especially if you plan on sleeping on the thing every night.  Wherever you buy your futon, be sure to try it out for awhile with the futon in the down “bed” position to make sure there aren’t any uncomfortable ridges or lumps.  Though most often an uncomfortable futon is uncomfortable due to a poor mattress, sometimes the frame is to blame, especially if the bed tilts one way or the other or is particularly high or low in the middle.  Any of these problems can cause a lot of long nights.

When you finally settle on a futon, bring it home and dress it up.  Many queen mattress covers fit futons well, so you can keep some sheets on the futon even when it’s in the up position.  A few throw pillows will spruce things up nicely and will keep your futon from looking like it belongs in a college dorm, even if you are, in fact, in a college dorm.  Whether you’re using your futon for your own bed every night, as a guest bed, or as the occasional place for your drunken roommate to crash, it’ll be more comfortable than the hide-a-bed and prettier than the ugly army cot your dad still hangs onto.

Most people will wait until they have a stable job after college before they apply for their first credit card. Although this seems like a great idea it might actually be a mistake.  Many companies now offer a first credit card to college students. They send out mass mailings to students currently in college offering them a credit card with a reasonable limit on it.  Some college students jump on this opportunity and before long they have their first credit card in their wallet or purse. Others don’t see the value in accepting the card since they don’t have a steady income.

Credit card companies often offer this type of first credit card deal to college students because they believe that the money is secure. They hold the view that if the child doesn’t pay the debt than the parent will. Although this is often the case sometimes it’s not and the child can find themselves finishing college with an already substantial debt courtesy of their first credit card.

If the college student can resist the temptation to use the credit card foolishly than it’s worth applying for and receiving that first credit card. The reason is that most credit card companies and banks will not give you credit unless you have credit.

Waiting until you’ve finished college before applying for a first credit card than you’ll have to prove your credit worthiness. This can be difficult if you’ve never had a credit card, loan or car payment.  Although many college students are carrying a debt in student loans, unfortunately this isn’t recognized as debt by credit bureaus. It’s wise to have built up a good credit history by applying for a first credit card when you’re presented with such an offer.

If you do receive a first credit card while in college use it very wisely. This means making payments on time and not using the card up to it’s limit. If you do charge the card to it’s limit you might find that your minimum monthly payments are being applied mainly to interest charges. This can take years to pay off.  Also don’t purchase items that aren’t essential. If you cannot pay the balance off each month than you shouldn’t be using the card to buy anything. Charge only things that you know you can pay for immediately once the bill arrives.

A first credit card is the beginning step towards a lifetime of good credit. Apply for a low interest credit card and be very careful how and when you use it. The card is a reflection of you and not your parents so recognize the responsibility that goes with it.

If you’re a high school student, you’re going to have to write a critical essay at some point.  The odds of you doing a number of critical essays goes up even more if you decide to attend a university or technical college.  These odds skyrocket if you major anywhere in the humanities, from political science to communications to English.  You’ll be writing more than your share of critical essays over the course of your college career.  Since you’ll be writing a lot of critical essays and since a good portion of your grades will be based upon them, especially if your professors or teachers are fond of giving essay based final exams, it’s worth it to learn how to write a good critical essay.

Once you have your thesis it’s important to sketch out a quick outline for your critical essay.  Though many students loathe outlines, they’re the best tool for making sure that your essay is well structured and clear.  A rough outline will give you an idea of the general flow of your essay, while a well detailed outline will make writing the actual essay a snap since you’ll only have to connect the dots you’re setup for yourself in the outline.  Just be sure that you focus on your thesis and that all of the components of your essay contribute to proving the thesis and you’ll be on your way to a solid critical essay.

It is one of those days that most school aged children hate, picture day. Finally, talk to your child and tell them what your expectations are. Usually, if you share with them your desire to get school photos that they can be proud to share with the family, they will try and do their best to make you smile when you see them.

I work in a daycare, so things can get pretty nasty and messy. Especially around snack time.  The whole place turns to chaos with spilled orange juice and punch, spit out cheese crackers, soggy sandwiches with jelly oozing, and all other manner of toddler detritus finding it’s way on the floor. It requires constant vigilance just to keep the place from getting totally out of control and cleaning it up is a nightmare. On top of that, we have to always maintain a certain appearance of order so that the parents know that their kids are being well taken care of. If only they knew what pandemonium goes on inside.

Last year, we bought a carpet cleaning machine, which really helped. Before the carpet cleaning machine, one of us was always down on his or her hands and needs with a cloth and cleaning spray, rubbing at the latest mess on the carpet, and trying to clean it up. No matter how much we cleaned the carpet would soon get spots and we’d have to call a carpet cleaning service to professionally clean it, which was no cheap matter.

Now that we have our carpet cleaning machine, we worry less about it. We have to get things initially mopped up to stop them from penetrating too deeply into the fabric of the carpet.  After that, we can go on with the kids and worry about it later. At night we’ll take the carpet cleaning machine and deep clean the mess.  Which doesn’t take very long, since the carpet cleaner is always kept in a closet just off of the main play room, from where it can be easily rolled out. Additionally, once every week we use the carpet cleaning machine to thoroughly clean up all of the carpets. We work much less hard and the place is much cleaner than ever before.

The carpet cleaning machine does have some problems. One is that it is very noisy, almost deafening. It was a cheaper model, but cheap means near $800, which is still quite a bit for a business of our size. And there is the wiring. It is an old building with sub-standard wiring, a fact that isn’t really that much of a problem normally, since all the wiring powers is basically the lighting and a refrigerator. But when we use the carpet cleaning machine, it often throws the breaker which can be very inconvenient.

A ball point pen is a great writing implements. They were not invented until shortly before World War II, in 1938 by Laszlo Biro. The creator got the idea from newspapers. He noticed that the ink in newspapers dried quickly and did not leave smudges, so he thought it would be a great idea to make a pen that used the same ink. To do that, he could not do a standard fountain pen, since the ink was too thick and dried to quickly for that. Instead, he put a tiny ball bearing at the very tip of the pen which would roll around, dispersing the ink as the pen moved on the page.

Ball point pens are still, to this day one of the best types of pens. They leak less than fountain pens, although the down side is that they dry out quickly sometimes. As a writer, finding just the perfect pen is really important to me. I don’t use a standard ball point pen, but instead use a pressurized pen modeled after the astronaut pens that can write in zero gravity. These pens have a pressurized capsule inside. Normal ballpoint pens depend on capillary action, combined with gravity, to keep the ink flowing. As the ink supply gets lower, they begin to work sporadically, stopping and starting, and it is very frustrating to write with one of these.  Trying to figure out exactly when it has become too unreliable and should be thrown out. My pressurized pen writes smoothly and continuously until it is completely out of ink. It only takes it a few letters to go from writing well to not writing at all and there is no need to fight with it.  It only stops writing when the ink supply is out.

There are other considerations that go into finding a pen then ink flow, believe it or not. One of these is the feel of the pen. A plastic ball point pen are alright, but there is nothing more pleasurable to write with than a nice heavy metal pen with an elegant design. It is soothing and comforting in your hand, it has weight, it has substance. It can be a fountain pen or a ball point, it doesn’t matter, it will be a joy to write with.

Another consideration is what kind of writing you are doing. If you are an artist or a calligrapher, you will require a much different kind of pen then a writer would use. If you press down hard when you write with your ball point pen, you will want much less ink flow than if you barely press down at all. The best thing to do is to experiment and see what works for you.
