Consumers are in debt more then ever today in America. The average credit card debt is rising and many people and families are finding it difficult to find a way to manage their debt and find a way to get out of debt. Debt programs have one purpose which is to help people successfully manage their debt. There are many different types of debt programs available depending on the unique needs of each individual.
Some debt programs focus on developing a budget and learning to live within that budget. For many people who struggle living from paycheck to paycheck, the basics of both budgets and budgeting is not only what is needed but is also the primary step in any financial goal. For those people already in debt, one debt program to consider is credit counseling. There are many community agencies that offer free debt counseling. For many people, this is a good step to learn what options are available to manage their debt and which debt program or debt programs would be best.
Debt consolidation is one type of debt program many consumers choose to use. In some situations, debt consolidation programs are a useful tool. If you have several current loans you are making payments on, debt consolidation is an option to consider. It can make it easier to manage your debt because you will have only one loan instead of several. You will only need to make one payment each month. Also, your monthly debt payments may even decrease if you consolidate since this debt program stretches your payments out over a longer period of time. This means that you’ll pay out less each month which has the added benefit of giving you some cash flow every month.
In severe situations the consumer may look at the possibility of debt negotiation. This is a debt program in which creditors are contacted about reducing the actual debt owed. Some credit counselors may speak with the consumers’ lenders and arbitrate for a pay off less than the full amount. It should be expected that this debt program will affect the consumer’s credit history and credit ranking.
Once debt is under control, perhaps the wisest debt program for the consumer is to engage in planning for the future. Financial planners are available to help consumers invest and plan for a secure financial future. Consumers have many debt programs available to them manage their finances and plan for the future. Before entering into any financial agreement or debt program, it would be wise to seek counsel from financial planners or credit counselors as to which debt program is right for you.

Many times, our lives do not go as we planned. There are unexpected occurrences that can devastate an individual’s personal finances. Credit cards are especially challenging because of the high interest rates attached to the convenient purchasing tools. Bad credit card debt can be a source of stress for anyone who has it because it can be overwhelming even for the most trustworthy person.
It is crucial to keep the line of communication open with your creditors. This can make the difference between having slow credit and having bad credit card debt. Many creditors are willing to work with you if you take the time to explain your situation and if you make an effort to come to a new payment arrangement with them.
In many instances, an individual who is having a great deal of trouble making his monthly payments can actually save money by communicating this to his creditors. I had a balance of eight-hundred dollars on one of my credit cards. I had trouble making payments because I was in a car accident and I had other bills that were high priority. After paying those bills, I had little left over.
I contacted my creditor before this got out of hand. This prevented me from accumulating bad credit card debt. I was able to come to a payment arrangement that actually put the bulk of my money on the principal rather than on the interest. With this new payment schedule, I had the entire balance paid off in a fraction of the time.
Making reasonable payment arrangements with your creditors is one benefit of keeping the lines of communication open. Another is possibly paying off the bill entirely. Some companies make a pay off offer to anyone who is at risk of accumulating bad credit card debt. This option is usually only offered if the debtor contacts the credit company with an inquiry.
I paid off a retail store’s bill for three hundred dollars below the balance by making an inquiry. Using money from my income tax refund, I paid off the debt in one payment in an amount we could both accept. This kept me from getting bad credit card debt while keeping my line of credit open with the store.
I learned my lesson about credit cards a little late. I accumulated too much debt and found myself in a tight situation. I kept myself from getting bad credit card debt by contacting my creditors and making the appropriate arrangements. It took a little willpower, especially when it came to using my long awaited income tax return to pay off debts, but bad credit card debt is a serious issue that can be avoided with a few phone calls.

The other month, I needed an advance cash loan to pay off my rent. It had been a terribly difficult couple of months for me. I had gotten sick and so had my boy, Davey. It was nothing serious – we both had just a minor infection, but our insurance wouldn’t cover the medicine we needed to fight it off. I am already living hand to mouth so $100 plus the copay isn’t chump change and I almost needed to get an advance cash loan to make ends meet as it is. But I didn’t, since the loan will only put me into debt.
But add to this, we had car trouble. I have an old clunker, an ‘83 ford that barely runs anymore and all of the sudden it broke down on the side of the road. Wouldn’t you know it. Turns out to be serious transmission trouble, so another $300 dollars that I didn’t have. Fortunately, we were entering the busy season. I work in retail and around Christmas, there’s always plenty of overtime to be had for those of us who want to work it. Then again, my advance cash loan set me back a pretty penny. The jerks insisted on charging me 15% interest on what I borrowed. So I decided to borrow very little from them and the rest from my aunt. I swallowed my pride and went over to her house.
In general she is an unassuming lady and eager to help, but she takes issues of financial responsibility very seriously, When I told her that I needed the money because of the prescription medicine, the car and the rent, she reminded me that for years, she had been telling me to save up “for a rainy day”. I told her that I knew that and wouldn’t even have come to her, except that the advance cash loan would cost me 15% interest. It would swallow up next months income as well. After berating me and brow beating me a little bit more, she did give me most of the money. She is not too rich herself and so $200 of what I was short I had to come up with from the advance cash loan. Still, that is a lot less money and I know that she won’t make me pay it back the very next month. I’m glad I didn’t get it all from the advance cash loan, and went to my aunt instead, it would have broken the bank otherwise.

You hear it in the news all of the time. People are living beyond their means, and they are using credit cards to do it. This means that they are spending more money each year than they make. Unless something changes, they really have no hope of paying that debt off. They may end up filing for bankruptcy. One way to reverse some of the damage is to cut credit card spending dramatically and by concentrating on paying some of it off. You can lower your amount of cards by taking advantage of a zero balance credit card transfer. Though this won’t work for everyone, it can help some.
If you get a zero balance credit card transfer, you have moved your balance to a new card without paying a fee. You would do this to transfer your debt from a credit card that might have a very high interest rate to one with a lower rate that is more manageable. Many times people pay the minimum balance payments on their cards and this does not go very far. You are paying mostly interest that way and the balance that is generating the interest never goes down. This can be an endeavor in frustration and why many are now opting for the zero balance credit card transfer to help cut down on interest rate payments.
You should make sure you do your research before you sign up. Don’t just take the first zero balance credit card transfer that you find. There may be hidden fees of which you were not aware, or there may be a problem with the interest rate in the future. Some of these offers give you a zero balance credit card transfer when you first sign up. You may find that after a few months that this interest rate might shoot back up where your old card was and if that happens, you really haven’t done anything to help your situation.
Make sure you have found an offer that gives you a low interest rate that will remain there and not go up after an initial introductory period. Also make sure you know the rules that come with that credit card. Some are easy to use and if you miss a payment you may not be penalized too much, but others have a different idea of how to do business. There are some companies that offer a zero balance credit card transfer that will up your interest rate to a very high number if you are as much as three days late with your payment. Know what you are getting into before you sign up.

When I first heard of 0 interest credit cards, I was shocked and amazed. I mean, why would they offer that to you, it was like a free loan for months at a time. I got a credit card and at first tried to exercise restraint, but soon I was using it for practically everything. I bought vacations, my groceries, my new guitar, everything in it, thinking I’d pay it back later. At the time I was 18 years old and playing in a rock and roll band, and I thought I could pay it all back later. How niave I was, but what fun those days were. We traveled all around the country, paying for our hotels and our rock star living using our 0 interest credit cards for years, thinking we were about to make it big until our irresponsible spending caught up with us. We played shows from Amsterdam to Arizona, from Berlin to Belgium, but in reality we weren’t making very much money. Just barely above breaking even, we did it for the love of the music.
By the time I went home, I was so greatly in debt that I was on the verge of getting my house repossessed for delinquent credit card payments. By that point, it wasn’t a 0 interest credit card anymore! I almost had to file for bancruptcy, and as it was, a lengthy legal battle ensued. Fortunately, my bandmates bailed me out, paying for part of my debt so that I could get it taken care of and get back on the road for our fall tour. After that, however, I lived differently. No more staying at the Ritz Carleton, no more caviar with our Jack Daniels.
From then on, I was living cleanly and within my means. I’d stay at budget hotels and spend responsibly. After the shows, we wouldn’t even drink the customary bottle of $150 champagne anymore. All of us were feeling the burn of our success. Sure we had fans and groupies, but we had gotten deeply into debt and besides, our rock and roll life style was ruining our health. Our drummer had cirrhosis of the liver, our guitarist had emphysema and our keyboardist had several broken ribs from a fight. You may think, when you’re young, that you can spend what you want and do what you want, but in reality you’ve got to be careful. You can end up a washed up has been like me when once you were a rock and roller. Your 0 interest credit card certainly can’t buy back your youth.

There have been many attempts to rid the world of African poverty. It seems obscene that it still exists in the 21st century. Whilst some African countries have made advances, others struggle terribly. Wars, drought, crop failure, disease, corrupt government and the apathy of the West have all played a part.
Charities do their bit to help. I am a member of an organization that recruits people to sponsor individuals in Africa. I sponsor a little girl in a remote village in Malawi. This organization, and similar ones, works in a clever way to combat African poverty. It allows me to establish a personal relationship with one child, but the money I send each month helps the whole community. They have used the money towards the cost of building a school and to dig a well. It’s also been used to buy mosquito nets, to address the problem of infant malaria, and to buy school equipment. My sponsored child writes letters to me through an interpreter, and I send letters to her and occasional gifts. The organization sends me reports on the work they do in the community and articles about African poverty in general.
This sponsorship is incredibly important to everyone in the community. As each village becomes self sufficient, the organization moves on to another community caught up in African poverty and invites its sponsors to take up a new sponsorship there. It’s a wonderful example of a well thought out and long term strategy. Some charitable giving has to deal with short-term emergencies of course. Just imagine, however, if everyone who could afford it, became a sponsor. Just think what effect that would have on African poverty.
The other way in which I try to give support is to buy Fair Trade goods in the local stores. The Fair Trade movement has been most successful in trying to combat African poverty by setting a fair price for farmers and growers in Africa, so they can achieve a reasonable standard of living. Some of the independent companies that have taken up the Fair Trade cause have been successful enough to be bought out by well-known brands. I buy Fair Trade coffee, tea, chocolate and bananas. So OK, it’s just my little bit. Imagine, once again, if everyone did the same.
The promises made, concerning African poverty, at the recent G8 Summit are under scrutiny at the moment. Progress on carrying out the promises must be monitored closely. Politicians have the ultimate power to get rid of African poverty once and for all. Celebrities such as Bob Geldof and Bono do the invaluable work of keeping the issue uppermost in our minds and on the news. Everyone, as an individual, can also do his or her bit. The only way out of African poverty is for all African communities to become self sufficient, and that’s something we can all aim for.
