There are lots and lots of people who will not eat factory farmed meat, but I am one of the only people I know who will not eat farmed fish. It all goes back to one time when I was a kid. We went to one of those fish farms meant for private fishers. Basically, there are two kinds of fish farming out there. There is the fish farm industry which produces most of the processed seafood that you eat in your daily life. Fish sticks, fish and chips, and even the baked salmon you order at your local seafood chain probably come from fish farms. These places are supposed to be pretty sterile, but in reality they are massively crowded. The fish are stuffed into small pond of water, crawling around on top of each other amidst heavy pollution. How do I know? Because I visited the second kind of fish farm as a kid.
Your typical aquaculture farm isn’t accessible to the community, but many of these fish farms supply salmon, catfish, trout and other freshwater creatures to farm fishing lakes. Basically, these are places where dads who don’t know how to fish can take their kids to catch their own fish. At this kind of fish farm, the lakes are literally jumping with them. The one we went to had hundreds upon hundreds of catfish, all bounding for the bait in a feeding frenzy. There is no challenge to catching something at a fish farm. There’s no sport to it at all. You drop a worm in the water and three fish bite for it. They are probably just committing suicide to get away from the crowded conditions.
The water was murky, the fish was disgusting and the whole experience at that fish farm was so unpleasant that I never wanted to eat fish again. A few years later I would eat ocean fish, but it was years before I would touched a freshwater fish. To this very day, I won’t eat anything from the sea unless I know that it really is from the sea. Farm raised fish is right out, no matter how clean and sanitary the conditions are supposed to be. I figured that if fish farms are that disgusting when they invite visitors in, the ones that you don’t get to see are probably that much worse. The idea makes me feel queasy and sick to my stomach.

Water is essential for our bodies. It is important that we keep hydrated to keep our bodies healthy. It is recommended that we drink so much water a day to give our bodies exactly what they need. Each year in the fall my husband takes several hunting trips. The destinations are usually within six to eight hours from our house so he takes extra days along with a weekend to hunt. He has many different hunting buddies that he goes on these trips with. There are some family trips that include his brothers and nephews and then there are trips that include long time hunting pals. Regardless of where he is going, what he is hunting and who he is with he always wants me to make a batch of chocolate chip cookies for him to take along. This started the first year we were married because I made a batch of the cookies for him to take along hunting. He likes them so much that I can hardly keep up making them during the fall months.
The chocolate chip cookies that I make are a cross between several recipes that I have seen in cookbooks or have eaten. There are some recipes for cookies that have many ingredients for energy including oatmeal, peanut butter and honey, and then there are the standard chocolate chip cookies recipes. I have combined the two and added a few touches of my own to create a cookie that is very tasty as well as packed with energy producing ingredients.
I started experimenting with the recipes because one of my husband’s friends did not like oatmeal. I wanted to leave the oatmeal in for the nutritional value. I had read that one of the famous chocolate chip cookies that are sold in the shopping malls uses a ground oatmeal. I decided that I would try using the blender. This works very well. I simply put a cup of oat meal at a time into the blender and push the grind button. The result is oatmeal flour that I add in with the wheat flour. The texture of the chocolate chip cookies no longer has the oatmeal in it. I also do not stop with the basic chocolate chips. I also add toffee chips, peanut butter chips or butterscotch chips, anything that I have on hand. The oat flour keeps the cookies moist. I also finely chop walnuts and pecans and add them to the chocolate chip cookies. I drop the dough in big balls that I make with the ice cream scoop.
This year I spent one afternoon making a huge batch of the chocolate chip cookie dough. I multiplied all the ingredient amounts by ten. I had a huge stainless steal bowl as well as my largest mixing bowl full of dough. I rolled the dough in long strips like the ready to bake cookies in the grocery store. Now I can bake them as he needs them without having to make the dough each time.

If they can get something right there, that is good for them, they are less likely to go somewhere else for something that might not be the best choice.

I’m not sure how it works with hotels, but I do know they change a lot more for their drinks than you might find in a machine outside of your grocery store. The same could be said for vending machines in amusement parks and other like venues. They may have a company that they deal with for their machines, but you never know. If you can get in on that somewhere with someone, you stand to make a healthy profit, even if you don’t sell quite as much as you would like. If you want to make some extra cash without too much effort, this might be a good investment for you.

Coffee has always been kind of a mixed bag. On the one hand, there are some things about it that are good for you. It has natural antidepressants and taking the time to drink a cup and relax in the morning can help you have a more happy and productive day. On the other hand, it is acidic and has loads of caffeine. This is not good for your stomach or for your blood pressure.
I used to be a serious coffee drinker and thought that I would never switch to decaffeinated coffee. For a coffee junkie like me decaf coffee is almost a sin. As a matter of fact, most of the serious coffee drinkers that I’ve known have switched to tea, or given up hot morning beverages altogether just to avoid drinking the dreaded decaf. Once I got over my prejudices against decaffeinated coffee, I found out that it was very nearly as good as regular coffee. Not only that but nowadays there are decaf coffee equivalence of almost any kind of coffee bean you can buy. You can get free trade coffee, French roast coffee – whatever you like. It all comes in decaffeinated coffee as well as in regular.
Of course, it can be a drag to give up caffeine entirely. It is always nice to have a pick me up in the morning, even if it is not as strong as a traditional cup of coffee. You might not know it but there is an alternative to decaffeinated coffee. You can actually get low caffeine content coffee. It has all the taste of regular coffee but lower caffeine content and lower acidity. It is not artificially decaffeinated through some chemical process, but instead bred to have a lower caffeine content. To me unless you’re really into a particular flavor, this stuff tastes much better than decaffeinated coffee. It certainly is worth a try at least!
The biggest mistake that people make when switching to decaffeinated coffee, is to switch to lower quality coffee. They will use flavor crystals when before they used to drink brewed fresh coffee. This is a mistake and it leads to the belief that decaffeinated coffee tastes much worse than normal coffee. Nothing could be farther from the truth!

The turn of the year is upon us again. I’m flabbergasted at how quickly they fly by. Since it will soon be New Year’s Eve, we all know what this means.
