Landlords and tenants are sometimes at odds. Other times landlords and tenants are very close friends. I was a tenant for different landlords over a period of twelve years and I have had many different landlord and tenant relationships. I have found that the ideal relationship between landlords and tenants is friendly, but distant and relaxed and professional. This is a very difficult balance to maintain, especially when dealing with a person’s housing.

My first landlord was a duo. The two men invested in a house less than a mile away from my college campus and they offered to rent it out to five students. They were looking for female students because they did a lot of work on the house and had visions of Animal House in their heads when it came to college boys.  Our landlord and tenant relationship was ideal because we took pride in our house and they were at ease with having girls living in the home. We did have our share of parties, but many things are kept secret between landlords and tenants.

My roommates and I enjoyed our stay and we each went our separate ways. To our surprise, the landlords were not happy with the way we left the home. They had expected it to be professionally cleaned before we left. They even included this in the lease, but none of us read the lease very closely.  This is a classic example of the importance of communication between landlords and tenants. If we had known that the home was supposed to be professionally cleaned, we would have had someone do the work. As it turned out, the deduction from our security deposits amounted to the cost of hiring a professional cleaner to polish the house. It balanced out in the end, but it did cause a rift in the relationship between the landlords and tenants.

My husband and I rented from a homeowner for five years. We married and had a child and it was time to move on. Landlords and tenants usually see each other frequently, but we almost never saw our landlord and this was good. He gave us privacy and he only contacted us when he thought something needed to be done to improve our apartment.

This landlord and tenant relationship was so distant that he did not even know that I had a baby. He was pleasantly surprised and wished us well. Landlords and tenants should have a distantly friendly relationship like this. In the end, we found that he put our security deposit in an interest bearing account. He gave us the security deposit back with interest. When it comes to landlords and tenants, this relationship was the best in my experience.

A good futon can be the most important piece of furniture for a wide range of people, especially students or those living in small apartments.  In fact, the humble futon is perhaps the patron saint of the studio apartment, as it lets you seamlessly combine the bed and the couch.  The futon’s shabby cousins, the foldaway bed, the Murphy bed and the hide-a-bed couch all took a stab at blending the bedroom and the living room, but none of them have the ease or the elegance of the futon.

The New York studio apartment is a unique beast.  It’s much smaller and much more expensive than any of it’s studio cousins in LA or Chicago, generally forcing it’s sometimes grumpy, usually cramped occupant to spend her waking, home bound hours stuck in one room.  A good futon finally makes this existence a little more livable.  The studio dweller can spend the day on a comfortable couch, lounging about, maybe reading a book.  Then when it’s time for bed easily slide down the back of the futon and turn it into a comfortable bed.  All it takes is a blanket thrown over the top of it and it’s ready to go.

A futon mattress can really make or break your futon, especially if you plan on sleeping on the thing every night.  Wherever you buy your futon, be sure to try it out for awhile with the futon in the down “bed” position to make sure there aren’t any uncomfortable ridges or lumps.  Though most often an uncomfortable futon is uncomfortable due to a poor mattress, sometimes the frame is to blame, especially if the bed tilts one way or the other or is particularly high or low in the middle.  Any of these problems can cause a lot of long nights.

When you finally settle on a futon, bring it home and dress it up.  Many queen mattress covers fit futons well, so you can keep some sheets on the futon even when it’s in the up position.  A few throw pillows will spruce things up nicely and will keep your futon from looking like it belongs in a college dorm, even if you are, in fact, in a college dorm.  Whether you’re using your futon for your own bed every night, as a guest bed, or as the occasional place for your drunken roommate to crash, it’ll be more comfortable than the hide-a-bed and prettier than the ugly army cot your dad still hangs onto.

Of all the despicable and disgusting cleaning tasks known to man, the most disgusting one is without doubt cleaning toilets. Cleaning toilets wins hands down. While I am never averse to rolling up my sleeves and getting dirty in the quest for a cleaner house and surroundings, I always and inevitably balk at the prospect of cleaning toilets. Call me sensitive, but I think a repository for human excrement needs to be cleaned by a machine. I can never get myself to indulge in cleaning toilets for anything in the world and I am sure most people would agree with me. I was even very sure of this till I happened to flip through a catalogue of toilet cleaning equipment one day at a mall.

In our house, we use little more than a bottle of germicide and a good old fashioned mop to indulge in cleaning toilets. During the times I have witnessed the cleaning staff in my office or at a mall, I have noticed that they use very similar equipment for cleaning toilets. The exception is our janitor at office, who uses liberal doses of noxious acid in his task of cleaning toilets on all the floors. Can’t say I disagree with the chap. Cleaning toilets in your home is one thing, but cleaning toilets at places frequented by hordes of other individuals is another thing altogether! Maybe the fumes were a way for him to knock his senses out before he began with cleaning toilets. He does seem to do a very good job though and I can’t really complain about the maintenance of our office toilets. They invariably sparkle and are clean and dry. But each time I think about cleaning toilets, I almost sully them all over again!

But getting back to the catalogue, there was a whole range of cleaning equipment, especially used for cleaning toilets. Now considering that I hate cleaning toilets as much as the next man, I can only consider it an act of a higher power to find myself browsing through that catalogue. I mean what other reason could there be? So I dutifully went up to the hardware store the catalogue guided me to and bought myself some heavy duty equipment to help me in cleaning toilets. After all, my disdain for cleaning toilets had always not gone down well with the other members of my family. While each of them took turns at cleaning toilets at home, I ran far away each time they looked for me to help them with the task. Now, with my newly purchased equipment, I was eager to prove that I too could indulge in cleaning toilets like the next man. Provided I had the right equipment of course!

There is something very inexplicable and enthralling about Ancient Egyptian art.  The Ancient Egyptians were one of the most enigmatic cultures of our earliest recorded history.  We know just enough about the Ancient Egyptians to make us realize how complex and sophisticated their society was, yet not nearly enough to answer all our questions about them.  Personally, the one facet about their culture I am most mystified and intrigued by is their art.  Ancient Egyptian art provokes the feelings of mystery shrouding over their culture perfectly.  Clearly, they were a passionate, creative, and strangely harmonious people, and Ancient Egyptian art shares these qualities with its viewers.

My family has a tradition, we build things. While other families take Sunday drives, play card games, or go and see movies, we spend a day in the workshop putting together something or other. I have three kids. The oldest is 17, but the youngest is only 5. Many charcoal grill designs are made in such a way that most of the charcoal just sits on the bottom, not doing anything. You have to continuously douse it with lighter fluid to get even a spark. With professional charcoal grills, air can come through the bottom grate, allowing much easier and more even ignition of the charcoal. Besides that, they are a little bit better made and easier to clean as well.

This professional charcoal grill that we were building was pretty fancy. In retrospect, I probably should have started with an easier project. It was a kit that you could build out of bricks and metal grating. Working with bricks and mortar looks deceptively simple, but if you have never done it before, you are in for a few surprises. We couldn’t get anything to fit evenly and my small daughter accidentally dropped her teddy bear in the cement. By the time she pulled it out, it was completely ruined. Worst of all, the professional charcoal grill looks lopsided and uneven. The pieces don’t fit very well together and we can’t really get a consistent flame. Because I had put together a lot of different projects, I assumed that I was up to this one. I guess I was wrong. We still use our portable charcoal grill for barbecues.
