I have a friend who is just a knock out. There is no other way to explain it. She’s beautiful and intelligent, and quite often is the voice of reason when I feel like I’m in crisis. She has great taste in clothes and always looks great when she dresses up. Though she looks perfect she is over 40 and says that there is no way she can go without her bra. When she wears something that does not allow for a regular bra, she has to find one with clear bra straps. Though she says that is not a perfect solution, it is what works for her.

Finding mother of the bride outfits is something that almost no one – at least no one in their right mind – looks forward to. Nonetheless, if you are a mother of the bride plus size, it is even worse. Now I am no fatty. In my day, I was even called voluptuous. Sure my body is not stick thin like the tabloids seem to like women, but I have always thought that curves look nice on a lady. Nonetheless, buying mother of the bride dresses has been a humiliating experience for me.

Almost everywhere that I go for mother of the bride outfits, it is the same old story. All of the flattering, beautiful mother of the bride outfits are in sizes much too small. It is as if the designers do not understand that as women grow, their bodies change. There are plenty of young and skinny people, but most of us put on a few pounds as we grow older. I shouldn’t have to look for a plus sized mother of the bride outfit at my girth, and if I do have to look for plus sizes, they should at least be flattering. This is why I decided to give up on all of the normal mother of the bride outfits. I wanted something sedate. Recently my husband and I attend a formal fund raising event for our church. The evening included drinks and appetizers followed by a dinner. The evening also included a performance by a renowned string quartet. The event was advertised as a formal event and the tickets were quite expensive. We live in a small resort town in the lakes area of our state. Because we are a resort area the dress tends to be very casual. The organizers for the fund raiser did not want casual attire so they emphasized that this was to be a formal event during their promotions.

My husband and I are strong supporters of our church so we decided that we would attend the event. I wore one of my cocktail dresses and my husband wore a suit. When we drove into the parking lot of where the event was being held I could not believe the clothes that I was seeing. Many of the women had on cocktail dresses, but some had on formal gowns. Others had on dresses that must have been worn as a bridesmaid dress at one point. One group of women had on a mixture of old bridesmaid dresses and prom dresses. They each wore a hat and several also had feather boas. I told my husband that I felt like I was going to a Halloween party rather than a formal event.

As we approached the door two of the women that were involved in organizing the event were greeting people. They were both tastefully dressed in cocktail dresses. They were visibly upset over the group that had arrived in the strange formal attire. One of the organizers is a friend of mine. We went to a secluded area so she could rant for a few minutes. She had tried so hard to promote a nice social event and she felt that the group of women were mocking her. I tried to tell her that they were the ones that looked out of place.

I also reminded her that even though the people that come to our resort area have a great deal of money, many of the local people, who are members of the church, have low paying jobs. These women most likely could not afford to buy cocktail dresses to wear for one evening. The group of women drew a great deal of attention. They also seemed to have a great deal of fun. As the evening progressed people enjoyed the drinks, food and music. By the end of the evening it did not seem to matter if you were in cocktail dresses or old formals. When the one organizer continued to complain about the group of women, I reminded her that they had paid the price for the tickets and they had not worn jeans.

I had never seen any of the backpack purses until my mom gave me one that she had bought but never used. Though I think it’s an interesting idea, I have never been able to bring myself to use it. It seems to be something that would be functional and also easy to carry, but I don’t like the look of the one she gave me. It probably doesn’t help that it was probably a cheap one that she bought on impulse and never really thought she’s use anyway.

The great thing about backpack purses is probably the backpack part of the equation. For a long time in college I didn’t even bother with a purse, but I carried a backpack with me wherever I went. I did this for two reasons. One was because I had books to carry and it was easier to just put stuff in the front of it, and secondly, because I kept losing my purse. I would always find a missing purse, but I knew one day I would run out of luck. I can imagine the backpack purses might negate my habit of seeing a purse down to do something else and forgetting about it.

This is my problem. I don’t like to have a purse that I can’t hang onto without tying up one of my hands. Sadly, I often forget this when I am choosing a purse, though I have gotten better at remembering to pick it back up once I have set it down. Perhaps it is because I now tend to carry around more money than I used to. Even though I know backpack purses might give me peace of mind I still can’t bring myself to carry one. If you seem to have the same problem that I do, there is no one saying that you can’t carry backpack purses if you really want to.

Though backpack purses aren’t quite as popular as they were a few years ago, you can still find them if you look. You may want to go to a store that has a wide variety of handbags if you want to find one, and you may have to dig through to find them. Backpack purses will come in all sizes and colors, and you just have to find one that fits your life. A great purse is only great if it makes you feel good and fulfills your needs, so look around before you decide.
