Adverse Reactions To Smells

Shopping malls, drugstores and boutiques always seem to have the latest and greatest perfumes prominently displayed in or near their cosmetics sections or counters. And chances are, customers will be bombarded with a medley of conflicting scents and aromas. While this might be appealing to some, there are many people who are allergic to most perfumes and who tend to have an adverse reaction when exposed to them.

My sister and I are both very allergic to most perfumes and colognes. Our adverse reactions range from mild irritation in the throat to raging headaches and feelings of extreme nausea. We’ve noticed that in many public areas and places of work, signs are posted indicating that these are scent-free zones. These policies are difficult to enforce. Just ask anyone who suffers from adverse reactions to perfumes and colognes.

It’s really strange. With scented oils from natural sources, my sister and I seem to be okay. Products from the Body Shop seem to be okay, other than the scent of dewberry which seems to heavily perfumes. But any of the natural scents like satsuma, vanilla, mango or strawberry, seem to cause no adverse reaction in either of us.

The worst scents of all are the cheaper perfumes, especially those seemingly favored by older ladies. These heavily scented perfumes completely choke us up and render us virtually breathless and not in a good way. What causes these reactions is really a mystery. We figure it must be the chemical components found in less expensive perfumes, since the more naturally sources scents are much more agreeable.

There’s really not a lot we can do about this allergic reaction. People in society can’t be expected to give up their signature scents for the sake of the few allergy sufferers. At the same time, those who manufacture these scents could switch to more natural sources. This of course would cost them extra money though.  So it’s highly unlikely that they would give up their more economical man made scents for the sake of the few who suffer because of these chemical components.

All we can do is avoid purchasing scents and colognes that we haven’t tested first. We can avoid heavily perfumed laundry detergents and hair products and opt for more naturally sourced perfumes and scents in the hopes to keep our adverse allergic reactions to a minimum.  I definitely feel bad for people whose reactions are not limited to minor inconvenience and who can actually stop breathing if exposed to their allergic triggers. Thankfully, much research and development has been done in the creation of anti-histamines to control allergic reactions, so the problem is manageable at the very least.

What Is Causing Those Bags Under Your Eyes

Having some dark heavy bags under your eyes can make anyone look terrible.  Even if you are young and feel fine, having bags under your eyes gives people the impression that you’re sick, tired, stressed or a lot older than you really are.  Some people seem to be especially prone to developing this baggy eye syndrome, and others never seem to suffer form it at all.  What causes bags under your eyes and how can you get rid of them?

Bags under your eyes are a result of a fluid buildup in the soft and especially elastic tissues of that are of your face.  They can develop for a number of reasons.  Not getting enough sleep is often a culprit, though the reason this leads to a build up of fluids is not completely understood.  Alcohol can cause you to retain fluids, and if you frequently get bags under your eyes you should avoid drinking.  A lot of studies have shown a clear connection between stress and baggy eyes as well.  Stress and lack of sleep are likely connected, and have the same root cause for bags under your eyes.  Also, many people develop puffy eyes in response to allergies.

There are some things you can do to help prevent bags under your eyes.  First of all, you’ll want to make sure you’re not just having some allergies, so you should see a doctor.  Allergies can often be treated, which may in turn cure the bags under your eyes as well.  If its not allergies, try sleeping with your head slightly elevated.  Doing this personally made a big difference for me.  Gravity alone can sometimes contribute to the fluid buildup beneath your eyes.  And while it’s often easier said than done, do what you can to get a full night’s sleep and avoid too much stress.  Look into some relaxation techniques, cut back on your caffeine intake, get more exercise or take a vacation.  All of these sorts of things will help lower stress and may work wonders in preventing bags under your eyes.

Once you have developed bags under your eyes, one recommended treatment is to place something cool, relatively heavy and wet over your eyes while lying down for 15 or more minutes.  There are loads of suggestions on what to use, but I’ve found that just about anything with some weight to it will help.  Essentially what you’re doing is compressing the fluids out of the tissue, so I don’t think it matters too much what you use.  As a last resort, there is a surgical procedure that will eliminate bags under your eyes.  If you are especially prone to this condition, and have tried everything else, ask your doctor about it.

Temporarily Insane - Temporary Color

My hair has been just about every color of the rainbow. By nature I have a rather rich, dark brown color to my hair, however, both of my younger sisters were born blonde and I must admit this held the key to my dissatisfaction over the years. As a teenager I experimented by splashing peroxide into my hair and going out in the sun. Or sometimes I would take a little lemon juice to my strands hoping to create some blondish highlights. I never ended up with more than a slight change to my hue, and it wasn’t until I moved out from home, that I started my hair experimentation in earnest.

Then I went stark raving mad! My first wish was to become a bleach blonde. None of these wishy-washy, dirty blonde, testing-of-the-waters for me. I stripped all of the natural color out of my hair. Then proceeded with the second step of the process, applying a heavenly shade of angelic blonde. Of course, not being a hair dresser, I thought it would be a good idea to double up the processing times. I ended up with crispy, fried ends, uneven color and too-large-to-ignore sections of hair that had broken off near the root.

Anyone with half a claim to sanity, would know that it was time to stop and give myself over to the hands of a professional. However, I still hadn’t lost my gumption. I decided a haircut was in order immediately, and I commissioned my younger sister to cut off my long damaged locks in favor of a short n’ spiky style. Surprisingly, this approach worked and I have pictures to this day that attest to the success of this adventure.

I guess I’ve always been a risk taker, especially when it comes to my hair. That’s not to say that I haven’t played around with temporary color from time to time. I’ve found that this non committal route has it’s place. Especially when I’ve had a hankering for a spicy red color, which tends to happen after a couple of glasses of wine, that I know will only be a passing fancy. My son who is only nine, also experiments with temporary color. He has a couple of tubes ranging from green to bright orange. And every once in a while, he’ll sport a new look that is thankfully easy to wash out. I’ve used temporary color for events as well. Such as concerts and parties, when I want to add some excitement to my look. However, I still tend to flirt with disaster preferring permanent color that is less likely to wash out or fade.

My hair is currently two-tone, light brown with lots of blonde highlights. I will likely lean towards a brighter blonde over the summer months, opting for darker shades in the winter. But every once in a while I’ll throw a new look in the mix - whether I play it safe with temporary color or go all out with a new permanent shade, just depends on my mood.

Many Cosmetic Ingredients Will Harm You

I have been working as a buyer for a major cosmetics company for the last several years and I have seen firsthand the shake up over cosmetics ingredients that is going on in the industry. Back in the day, the only standard of a cosmetic ingredient was how well it did the job. Cosmetic ingredients would be made out of practically anything and no one cared. Some people say that people in the industry knew about some of the cosmetics makeup health risks, but I think most of them were actually ignorant. Don’t get me wrong – sometimes it pays to look the other way and ignore what might be an creeping suspicion. Nonetheless, no one thought about organic cosmetics ingredients because the synthetic ones seemed to work so well. How could it be dangerous when it made you look so much younger and feel so much better?

Nowadays, we are finding out just how harmful some cosmetics ingredients can be. Every day, new research comes out showing what skincare products can do to the body. Makeup cosmetics have never been put to the same standards as foodstuffs, and the industry does not have to prove that their cosmetics ingredients are safe before using them. Nonetheless, the skin is porous. What you put on your skin gets into your bloodstream one way or another. It is as simple as that.

Most of the make up ingredient supplier companies a decade ago were completely insensitive to this fact. Those that could sell the cheapest, best skin care ingredients to the makeup companies would do the best business. Nowadays, however, it is a whole different story. Natural oils, cosmetics ingredients that haven’t been tested on animals and organic makeup are all the rage. It used to be enough to look healthy. Nowadays, the emphasis is on being healthy as well.

If you’re worried about harmful cosmetic ingredients, you are not alone. Unfortunately, sometimes there is no way to tell whether or not a cosmetic ingredient is safe. Sometimes, the only thing you can do is to err on the side of caution. Generally, things made with entirely natural oils and fragrances are safe. Cosmetics ingredients that involve petroleum products, non-organic products, or anything where you can’t pronounce the name, may be unhealthy. Although it is more expensive to buy from a small, private label cosmetics company, it may be worth it. Who knows what we will discover about the ingredients that we have assumed are safe!

Prepare Your Skin For A Close Shave

Even though shaving is a task that is boring, time-consuming and sometimes frustrating, millions of people are faced with getting rid of unwanted hair and everyone seems to be in search of how to get a close shave. Getting a close shave is not as easy as one might think. It is not as simple as splashing some water on your skin, lathering up the shave gel and taking out the razor. The skin must be prepared, the proper shaving gel, cream or lotion must be used and adequate after care must be taken.  Shaving can be traced back to the early Egyptians, who were known for bathing several times a day and removing unwanted body hair using a clamshell. My guess is that they probably weren’t able to get a close shave with such a primitive tool!

For both men and women, it is important to prepare the skin before attempting to remove the hair. After you have chosen a proper shaving gel, this will be one that lathers well and remains on the skins surface.  You should massage the gel into the skin instead of just spreading it on quickly. Remember that hair does not all grow in the same direction, so making a few passes over the skin with the razor held in different directions will provide a close shave.  Professional barbers agree that the number of blades on a razor does not guarantee a better job will be done. If the skin has been prepared correctly, there is no need for a double or triple blade razor, a single blade razor will allow for a close shave.

Once the skin has been shaved, it should be rinsed with cool water. It should never be rubbed, but instead patted dry with a clean towel. Many people in pursuit of a close shave are not aware that the act of shaving not only removes unwanted hair, but can also remove two layers of skin! For this reason, it is wise to apply a balm-like after-shave product, instead of one that is alcohol or perfume based, which are likely to irritate the skin.  If you are unfortunate enough to suffer from razor burn or bumps, using a cream that contains 5% benzoyl peroxide should soothe the irritation.

By experimenting with different shaving gels and creams, some people even prefer to use shaving oils, you will be able to determine which one works best with your skin type. Remember to always use a sharp blade, as a dull one will just drag along the skin and cause irritation, and never shave right after waking in the morning. The first thing in the morning your skin tends to be puffy and a close shave will be near impossible. Waiting approximately 30 minutes after rising from bed will allow the skin to return to its natural, non-puffy state. With a little practice and patience, you to can enjoy a close shave.

Old People Love Bath And Body Products

It is amazing to me the amount of merchandise choices we have today. There are so many specialty stores as well as huge department stores with specialized merchandise. There is also the option of getting items online. It seems that one of the trends is the number of products that are available to help people look younger. Many people contribute this to the fact that such a large portion of the population is aging.

As the generation of baby boomers age they seem to be fighting the process the entire way. This is not a generation that is going to fade away into retirement. This is the population that is buying bath and body products to the tune of millions of dollars. It used to be that the bath and body products industry would focus on teenage girls as well as young adult women. Now the commercials and advertisements are geared towards the middle aged and older. Each week there seems to be a new marketing campaign that is designed to make you look younger, take years off your face in one treatment or make wrinkles disappear. I guess the use of bath and body products is preferable to plastic surgeries. Bath and body products do offer a solution that is not as radical or expensive as having cosmetic procedures done.

It seems that trends shift and what is popular for one group of people fades away in time. I am hoping that as time passes people will once again take pride in the wrinkles and grey hairs that they have earned on their road of life. I know women that will cry and go into a deep depression at the signs of wrinkles. I have never been able to understand why the passage of time and aging seems to surprise so many people. It is only common sense that as we age our skin, hair, muscles and bones are going to age with us. Taking care of ourselves needs to be a life long process, not a panic attack of bath and body products at middle age.

My sister is a person that loved to have a tan. She would lie in the sun for hours as a teenager and young woman. Now that she is in her fifties this is evident in the skin on her face. She is one that is always looking at the newest bath and body products to find a way to rejuvenate her skin. She wishes now that she had listened to our mother when she was growing up. Our mother cautioned her about what the sun can do to your skin.
