Teddy Bear In The Cement - Professional Charcoal Grill

My family has a tradition, we build things. While other families take Sunday drives, play card games, or go and see movies, we spend a day in the workshop putting together something or other. I have three kids. The oldest is 17, but the youngest is only 5. She has not been able to get involved in putting any of our projects together in the past, so I thought that this summer I would find something easy to involve her in. We bought a  professional charcoal grill kit, thinking that nothing could go wrong with such a simple, straight forward project. Boy were we mistaken!

It was a patio professional charcoal grill, really nice and perfectly designed to fit into our backyard. The term  professional charcoal grill is really a misnomer, all kinds of different grills are used by professionals. For the most part, there are a few things that distinguish  professional grills from the rest. They tend to be better designed so that the charcoal can burn more easily. Many charcoal grill designs are made in such a way that most of the charcoal just sits on the bottom, not doing anything. You have to continuously douse it with lighter fluid to get even a spark. With professional charcoal grills, air can come through the bottom grate, allowing much easier and more even ignition of the charcoal. Besides that, they are a little bit better made and easier to clean as well.

This professional charcoal grill that we were building was pretty fancy. In retrospect, I probably should have started with an easier project. It was a kit that you could build out of bricks and metal grating. Working with bricks and mortar looks deceptively simple, but if you have never done it before, you are in for a few surprises. We couldn’t get anything to fit evenly and my small daughter accidentally dropped her teddy bear in the cement. By the time she pulled it out, it was completely ruined. Worst of all, the professional charcoal grill looks lopsided and uneven. The pieces don’t fit very well together and we can’t really get a consistent flame. Because I had put together a lot of different projects, I assumed that I was up to this one. I guess I was wrong. We still use our portable charcoal grill for barbecues. The professional charcoal grill sits, unused and slightly embarrassing, in the corner.

From Canning To Candles - Mason Jars

When I grew up I was always surrounded by mason jars. There are still a ton of them in my mom’s basement, though she doesn’t use them any longer. She and my grandmother were both avid canners, and they always made sure they took their time and saved each of the precious vegetables they had growing in their gardens each summer. I always had a fun time helping with this chore and though I don’t do it myself, I do know there are many who still do it.

Both my grandmother and my mom used mason jars they had used before, but they always had to end up buying more. The grocery stores in my area always had jars for sale because many people where I grew up canned food for the winter, and they wanted their business. I don’t find this as much as I did when I was a child, but on occasion I do come across a display in a local store and it reminds me of my childhood. Funny how something as simple as mason jars in a store display can bring back pleasant feelings from long ago.

Mason jars aren’t just for canning though, there are a lot of people who have found a new use for them. I have a friend who makes and sells candles, and a lot of her candles are in mason jars and other glass containers. They have a homey look to them and many people prefer this type of candle because the mason jars can be closed.  This type of candle is all around cleaner and easier to take care of. She has a large assortment of mason jars in her garage and she will end up using every single one of them. I have quite a few of them in my house and I love how they can be stored anywhere and used at any time.

If you need a large supply of mason jars for any reason, you can get them at a good price. They are generally not very expensive and if you buy large amounts at once, you can save even more money. If you can’t find them locally, you can look online for good deals. In most cases, you will find ads in your local classifieds. People cleaning out attics, garages and basements may be looking to get rid of a bunch of them and you may get an amazing deal that way.

There’s Nothing Like The Sizzle Of A Charcoal Grill

If you were born in the good old US of A, or lived here for some time, then you’ve probably had a cookout or barbeque of some kind. We tend to pride ourselves on these things. American family tradition and good home cooking resonate on our gleeful mugs at the sound of a grilled burger, hot dog or steak.

Although gas grills are becoming more and more prominent, the old school charcoal grills are still preferred by many of us. There’s just something about that grilled flavor that’s hard to let go of. Those red coals fill the mouth watering meat with an incomparable flavor that can’t be forgotten.

The options we face when buying a grill are quite different than what our parents dealt with. Gas, electric, infrared and portable just to name the basics. Personally I have used a charcoal grill since I was a child. These smoky, simplified wonders are hard to let go of. While some friends tell me gas is all the rage these days and the coal isn’t as healthy as we once thought, I still can’t abandon the taste. Anyone who has grilled on gas and charcoal can tell you that there’s a difference.

When it comes to charcoal, the flavor is phenomenal. Charcoal grills are still widely available at stores such as Sears or Lowes, or a number of websites like Americasbestbbq.com. The variety is much nicer than it used to be. A certain advantage to using a charcoal grill is the price. A simple freestanding grill can be found for 50 bucks, while many gas grills range anywhere from $200 to thousands of dollars.

As a family man myself, I make use of a simple charcoal grill a number of times throughout the summer. What better time to cook out with family and friends. Anything from hot dogs to hamburgers to brats to shish kabobs can be flamed on one of these classic cookers. The heat and smoke from the charcoal add an amazing flavor to any meat of choice. There are even hickory chips that can be added for an additional enhancement.

When shopping around for a charcoal grill that’s right for you and your family, make sure to take into consideration the size and number of people being fed. There are a variety of grills to suit the needs of an enormous family get together or simply a single man or woman just looking for a change in the mundane daily meals.

Save Your Food With Vacuum Sealers

When it comes to leftovers, you may find that you end up with a lot of containers in your refrigerator that people either won’t touch, or that spoil before anyone gets a chance to eat them. Younger children may not be able to tell when something is spoiled and they run the risk of eating something they shouldn’t. There isn’t always time to check up on everything either, though some people miraculously seem to find the time. I do not and throwing out leftovers is something that happens in one marathon session each week. I don’t know why I bother to save anything because it spoils so quickly. Perhaps I need to look into food vacuum sealers.

I have seen a lot about food vacuum sealers on television but I don’t have a lot of experience with them myself. I do know someone who has one and she claims that she uses it all the time, and that it does indeed help you keep some foods fresh for longer periods of time. When she gets her lettuce home from the store, she generally washes it, cuts it into four parts, and then uses on of her food vacuum sealers to seal the four pieces for later use. She says this makes it easy for her to make salads when she needs them and that the lettuce lasts longer than it did before she used this method of storage.

You might also use food vacuum sealers for things like bread and chips. I’m not sure if they would work well with chips that may break, but I can see why creating a vacuum seal would help the items last longer. You can use the food vacuum sealers to create an airtight seal on just about anything, and this will extend the freshness and shelf life of almost any type of food.

The problem I have with food vacuum sealers is that they seem to be more of a pain than anything else. I can’t fairly say this because I don’t have one, but there are times when shoving my leftovers into a covered bowl is a chore. I am perhaps just to busy for my own good and that might just be my problem. Don’t take my word for it though, you should go out and look for user reviews of food vacuum sealers if you are thinking about getting one. You may find that you can save money on your grocery store and that you can alleviate some of the guilt involved with throwing out food that has spoiled way too soon.

Make The Perfect Chocolate Brownie

Chocolate brownies are as well known to desert-lovers as ice cream. In fact the two go together quite nicely. The first brownie was advertised in the 1897 Sears catalog. An accidental discovery, they were invented when an American baker accidentally left out the baking powder in a cake recipe. The chocolate brownie got its name from, you guessed it, the chocolate brown color. A brownie is welcome year around, for dessert, an after-school snack or as an addition to a cookie gift basket.

So popular is the chocolate brownie that those little Easy-Bake ovens for children were created just to make brownies! Because the “ideal” brownie has the texture of a cookie, it fits into the category of bar cookies.  Some people prefer a cake-like texture, while others favor a firmer, fudge-like brownie. You’ll find that there are hundreds of brownie recipes but only a few will satisfy your qualifications for the perfect taste.

The basic ingredients in the chocolate brownie are cocoa, flour, eggs, milk and water. For those of you with dairy allergies most brownie recipes aren’t suitable. However, soy milk may be substituted for the milk if this is the case.

There are many variations on the classic chocolate brownie recipe. Chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, carob chips or peanut butter chips make a richer tasting brownie, especially popular with kids and chocolate fiends. Peanut butter chips produce a chocolate brownie with a creamier taste. When using peanut butter chips, you’ll need to decrease the baking time by a few minutes. There are also dark chocolate bars with a high cocoa content, up to 70%, that are velvety smooth and rich. Just break a 100-gram bar into small chunks and stir into the batter before baking. Walnuts or pecans are good in holiday brownies, as are marshmallow cremes.

When you add these extras to your chocolate brownie recipe, the resulting texture will be different. While some bake up spongy and cake-like, others will be rich and fudgy. The general rule is the more liquids there are in the mix, the richer the brownie will become. Chocolate and peanut butter produce a chocolate brownie with a creamy consistency. If you desire a fluffier, cake-like brownie, reduce the liquids and chips and add more cocoa. The addition of a small amount of baking powder will create a delightfully spongy brownie.

For 110 years, the chocolate brownie has been a favorite of children and adults. Whether served as an everyday treat or as a special gourmet addition to a holiday gift basket, there’s no doubt we’ll be enjoying the chocolate brownie for generations to come.

BBQ Sauce - For Veggies, Meat & Friendship

I have a friend who lives in Australia and we love to send food and other interesting items to each other. We try to send things that we can’t get in our own countries and some of the things she has sent me were rather interesting. If you ever get the chance to try musk sticks straight from Australia, I urge you to turn heel and run away as fast as you can. If you want to know what they taste like, just go get a bottle of perfume and spray it in your mouth. If you like that, you’ll like musk sticks. Most stuff has been good though. I have sent many things that my friend likes but her favorite by far was the BBQ sauce that I had sent her last year.

The BBQ sauce that I sent her was made in a city nearby and was not really available anywhere else. You can get it in my region of my state and it is somewhat famous in the area, but I knew she could not get it over there. I don’t know how much different it is from the BBQ sauce that she normally uses but she emailed me excitedly to tell me that it was the best she had ever had and she wanted to know when I could send her some more.

What struck me as funny was that she is a vegetarian – which I didn’t realize when I sent the BBQ sauce in the first place but she still wanted more. She explained that they had used it on their veggies and that it had been great for that purpose. She conserved as much of it as she could because she knew that I couldn’t afford to send her a bottle every month of the year. Though she does know that the more Tim Tams she sends me the more BBQ sauce she can get out of me.

She doesn’t know it yet but I think I have found something to send her that she will really love. It is the same BBQ sauce that she loves but what I have found is even better. There is a gift pack out for the holidays that includes that flavor and five others, all by the same company. She is going to be beside herself when she gets it. Each type of BBQ sauce is a different flavor and she can experiment to her hearts content.
