Following right along the huge popularity of digital cameras came a host of new photo editing software programs.  Though photo editing software actually predates most modern digital photography.  Photos would be scanned into a computer to be digitally manipulated, it was digital photography that really allowed photo editing software to take off.

The best thing about photo editing software is that, combined with digital photography, it allows the consumer to do at home what used to be impossible without a full darkroom or professional photography studio.  Everybody can now digitally remaster their photos at home to make them much better than they were to begin with.

Another handy feature of nearly all photo editing software suites is that they allow you to alter the brightness and contrast of your photo with a few clicks of your mouse.  Aside from poor composition, which can usually be corrected with a little cropping, one of the most common causes of bad photos is that they’re either too light or too dark.  By adjusting the contrast and brightness sliders in your photo editing software you can’t save every photo, but you can save a lot of them and what’s even better, you can make your already good photos great.

Photo editing software varies from here quite a bit, depending on the manufacturer.  Some photo editing software, especially software which comes bundled with digital cameras, usually only has features for cropping, resizing, and adjusting brightness and contrast.  Other, more advanced programs like Adobe Photoshop will allow you to alter the brightness and contrast of each color in the photo relative to the rest of the colors, to work in adjustment levels and to add other visual filters to your photo.  You can even blend photos together or take a person from one photo and drop him or her into another.  This is helpful if your uncle keeps missing the family reunions.  Regardless of what software you use, all photo editing software can help you make your photos a lot better.

MP3 digital music is one of the most popular forms for music to take these days.  Digital music just seems to make sense and is a natural step forward in the music world today.  Everything else is digital these days, why wouldn’t our music be?

While music is still purchased in the form of CDs, it is very often converted into MP3 digital music for use on a computer or MP3 player.  Sometimes it seems like CD players are all but obsolete now, and I almost never use mine anymore.  It is nice to have music backed up on CDs, and I try to keep my CD collection current even if I’m not listening to them directly very much.  I have a sort of inherent distrust of computers and all things purely digital, and I’m just waiting for my digital music players to explode one day.

MP3 players have a lot of nice advantages to them over CDs.  First of all, they are of course much smaller.  Most MP3 players can easily fit into your pocket, unlike bulky CD players.  Even the smallest portable CD player is enormous compared to the average MP3 player.  MP3 digital music can be stored on a hard drive of an MP3 player or computer, and so no CDs are needed.  You can load up all the MP3 digital music you want on your computer and never have to worry about losing or scratching any of it.

One of the most popular portable digital music players today is Apple’s iPod, and since it’s made by Apple it just has to be different.  Therefore it does not use the MP3 digital music files other players use, and instead uses its own spiffy Apple format exclusive to iPods.  As an owner of both an MP3 player and an iPod, this fact continuously frustrates me, as it is nothing short of a pain in the ass to transfer music from one player to the other.

MP3 digital music is also of a fairly small file size, which is handy.  My laptop has a 120 GB hard drive on it, and I can fit my entire music collection on it in the MP3 digital music format without making a dent in the overall space available.  The MP3 digital music format poses some serious threats to the music industry, as it is so easy to share and pass around.

Today you can’t go through a newspaper or a magazine without seeing at least one Dell computer ad. They seem to be everywhere! Take your local tabloid, and Dell computer is prominently splashed on the back cover. Get online, and one in five banners is selling you a Dell computer. There’s a Dell computer on a billboard, a Dell computer on a blimp and a Dell computer even in a coupon booklet! Dell Computers today is an omnipresent, omniscient entity.

But back in the early 1980’s, nobody had ever heard of Dell computer. That was because, in those days, Michael Dell, the founder of Dell computers was in college, studying to be a doctor. Of course, like most intelligent youngsters in those days, he dabbled in computers – the emerging technology that was changing the way people worked. But this dabbling was more than a mere hobby and the young Michael Dell began assembling and selling his own brand of computers from his hostel room. These were the very first examples of what we have come to know as the Dell computer.

In the process of making and selling his Dell computer, Michael Dell had stumbled upon what has come to be known as the made to order revolution. The premise behind every Dell computer was simple. By procuring the parts at a wholesale price and assembling them when an order came in, the middlemen in the computer business could easily be eliminated. This was common sense. What was uncommon, was the amount of savings that such a straightforward tactic could result in. Even the largest computer manufacturers of the day did not realize that the bulk of their production cost was going to middlemen. Michael Dell did and it resulted in Dell computers becoming a household name.

Dell computer which started in the year 1984 with a meager thousand dollar investment by Michael Dell has today grown into a multi-billion dollar corporation with a presence in over 40 countries of the world. Although Dell computers employs thousands of people, the vast majority of them are in the computer manufacturing side of the business. There is nothing more than a nominal presence in the retail aspect of the Dell computer business. Dell’s built to order methodology has also succeeded in giving consumers with better value for money as any savings made in part procurement, lack of inventory overheads and absence of a hefty retail mark up can be passed on to the consumers.

And if his ads are any indication, Dell is doing very well indeed! Without salesmen pitching his products, without dealers stocking them, without warehouses distributing them, if Dell computers has been able to able to carve a market share for itself among the more established players like IBM, HP and others, it is indeed a testimony for the power of e-tailing over retailing. And Michael Dell should know. Not only was he the youngest CEO to earn a spot on the Fortune 500, he continues to sit as a full member on the US Government’s President Advisory Council on Science and Technology.

As a small business owner, I know how important it is to stay in contact with my customers.  Doing so lets them know that I am more concerned about establishing an ongoing relationship than just making a single sale.  For me, staying in contact can take several different forms, such as sending out monthly newsletters, sales notices, updated product catalogs or even annual reviews.  No matter what kind of materials I choose to send to my customers it usually takes a lot of time and effort to successfully complete a mass mailing.  Fortunately, I have supplies such as Avery address labels that make the whole process go a lot faster.

If you are an advertising agency executive, advertising software can really give you an edge you need. In fact, advertising software is almost completely indispensable because how can you keep track of all of your clients, projects and accounts without it? You just can’t.

We recently purchased, installed and began using Adobe Creative Suite at work. Although I am a diehard Quark fan, the cost of purchasing the software, was too cost prohibitive for our office. We opted for Adobe Creative Suite because it includes two of the industry standard tools for design - PhotoShop and Illustrator - and a contender for the title of number three: InDesign. So, like it or not, I have been forced to learn how to use Adobe’s layout tool and I must admit, I’ve come to like it.

At first, I balked at the differences between Quark and InDesign. Using Quark had come to be second nature for me. It’s so intuitive, I felt like it was an extension of my own body. So, it’s not surprising that making the switch to InDesign was somewhat painful for me. I can now use this tool quite adeptly, accomplishing pretty much anything I could previously do with Quark, much to Adobe’s credit.

Another bonus that is included in Adobe Creative Suite that I like is the image bank. I’ve installed it on my computer at work and it’s a great asset in my daily job. Part of my day’s work includes updating our Intranet home page with stories and imagery that relates to our region and workforce. The image bank included on the Adobe Creative Suite CDs is quite vast and a welcome resource when other image sources have become overused and exhausted.

We have recently installed Adobe Creative Suite at home. Although my husband is yet to be convinced about InDesign being a close contender to QuarkXpress, I’m quite confident that if he gives InDesign a run for it’s money, he will be pleased with the outcome and quickly become skilled in it’s use. I’ve even heard that you can have cloak InDesign to mimic Quark, if you really just can’t get the usability out of it with it’s current functionality.

In my opinion, releasing Adobe Creative Suite as a package deal was a marvelous move on the part of Adobe. They have revolutionized the tools used by designers across the industry, getting a stranglehold on the market. There will always be those who swear that Quark is better than InDesign, however, the purchase of InDesign is much more economical, especially when obtained as part of Adobe Creative Suite. The cost factor alone is likely enough to end this debate once and for all.

As a writer, I certainly appreciate the value of wireless notebooks.  This way I can travel with my work and it’s no big hassle.  If I want to finish a script or write a quick synopsis on the way to my parents’ house for the holidays, no big deal, I just grab my Mac and go.

Diablo II: Lord of Destruction is the expansion pack follow up for the second of the Diablo series games.  As Diablo II is still to this day one of the most widely play computer games in the world.  The expansion for it, Lord of Destruction, is likewise still a hot seller.  Since there was never an ‘expansion’ for the first Diablo, I was surprised and excited when I head about the development of Lord of Destruction, and looked forward to it eagerly.

Few other computer games in gaming history have as much of a fan base and name recognition as the Diablo series.  Blizzard could have release any piece of junk it wanted as an expansion pack for Diablo II and it would have sold like crazy.  Fortunately for fans of the series, Lord of Destruction was not any piece of Junk.  Lord of Destruction is probably one of the most extensive and well-conceived expansion packs I’ve ever purchased for a game.  It seems Blizzard can do no wrong with the Diablo series, and it’s good to know they take it so seriously.

Not only does Lord of Destruction add a lot of new areas to battle through, including an entire new chapter to the game, it also adds loads of new content that makes the whole game feel new all over again.  New items, new ways to modify your equipment, new playable characters, new monsters to bash, everything gets an upgrade.  Even better, you can finally turn the resolution up a notch to 800×600!  This fact more than anything I’ve appreciated the most.

The new content is in itself enough to make Lord of Destruction a successful expansion, but it’s added a chapter is also amazing.  It was clear that they were planning to continue the plot from the ending of Diablo II, but how can you make an effective expansion when you’ve already killed Diablo himself?  Well, they pulled it off.  Baal, Diablo’s brother and the new villain in the Lord of Destruction expansion, makes Diablo seem like just some overgrown red guy with spikes on his back.

The best part in the Lord of Destruction expansion is getting to Baal.  The new chapter is the best written and most visually stunning of them all.  You’ll fight your way through sieges and battle your way up snow covered mountains to get to your ultimate goal.  There are plenty of side quests and mini-bosses on the way to keep you focused.  If you enjoyed Diablo or Diablo II at all, I definitely recommend picking up Lord of Destruction.
