There are many who love to take a ride on a motorcycle to feel the wind and the weather, and to enjoy the feeling of the sun on their face. Though I am not partial to them myself, I have family members who love to ride them and one that owns a motorcycle shop. I have learned a lot of things about these machines through them and some things that I never knew about motorcycle clothing. I never really thought about it, but you do have to watch what you wear when you ride.

Most children learn that it is not a good idea to have anything hanging down from their legs when they are riding their bikes. The same holds true for motorcycle clothing. You don’t want to be wearing anything that could get caught in a moving part while the bike is in motion. You may notice that some have tight jeans on no matter what the fashion trends of the day are. They are protecting themselves from getting hurt.

I always thought that leather jackets were a fashion statement for bikers, but really, they make a lot of sense if you think about it. When you are riding in a car, you have protection from bugs and other things that might be in the air. You don’t have that protection on a motorcycle. Those things can feel like bullets hitting your skin and the leather jackets are some of the best motorcycle clothing protection you can have. Other jackets work, but these are probably the best choice. Even on hot days, you can get chilly on a bike and they offer warmth as well.

One thing I never thought about was long hair. Though it is not technically motorcycle clothing, there are some things that women and men with long hair should consider before hopping on a bike. The wind can do a lot of damage to hair and it is a good idea to protect it. Most put long hair in a ponytail or a braid, but there are hair protectors that go down the length of that ponytail or braid to stop the wind from knotting the hair. Though some motorcycle clothing might seem like a fashion, it is mostly for the protection of the body. Though a short ride on a motorcycle might not be that bad if you aren’t prepared, anyone going for a long ride needs to have the right clothing.

I have a friend who is just a knock out. There is no other way to explain it. She’s beautiful and intelligent, and quite often is the voice of reason when I feel like I’m in crisis. She has great taste in clothes and always looks great when she dresses up. Though she looks perfect she is over 40 and says that there is no way she can go without her bra. When she wears something that does not allow for a regular bra, she has to find one with clear bra straps. Though she says that is not a perfect solution, it is what works for her.

I personally don’t own anything that would necessitate the need for clear bra straps, but I think it is high time that someone invented them. I don’t know what the social code is for wearing a bra like that, but I know I would much rather see clear bra straps when someone is wearing something low cut than to see just too much. Often women wear low cut tops and they don’t wear a bra with it because the top is cut strangely. If they don’t wear a bra they hang out all over the place.

They are great for women who might need something a little better than a strapless bra can handle. If someone has a large chest, there just aren’t strapless bras strong enough to handle the problem. That is where clear bra straps are a Godsend. There is nothing worse that being a large chest women and being confronted with a strapless dress. Though there are some women who love to let it all hang out, most of us aren’t willing to share that much with the world. The next time I am in a wedding, I know I am going out to find something with clear bra straps or I’m just not going to be involved at all.

There are some times when you might not want to wear clear bra straps and it will depend on who you are and how comfortable you are. I know that even though they are clear, they are still part of a bra. I might wear one if only a small portion of it might be showing, but you won’t catch me wearing clear bra straps on a strapless dress. Third, if it’s at all possible, you should do a bit of research into the charity that you intend your clothing donation to benefit.  The reason you should do so is that not all charities spend their money in the same way.  Some places have higher overhead costs, which means that fewer resources actually end up helping underprivileged people.  When you donate clothes, charities will do one of two things.  They will either distribute the clothes to the needy through homeless shelters and the like, or they will sell the clothes in a second-hand retail setting.  If they sell the clothes, then you’ll definitely want to know how much of the money is earmarked for charitable purposes and how much is used for salaries and so forth.

Clothing donations are a wonderful, easy way to help your favorite church or charity.  I encourage you to follow these guidelines before doing so in order to ensure that the experience is as beneficial as possible to all of the parties involved.

I live in New York State very close to the Pennsylvania border. Though it may not seem like a complicated issue, there are times when the differences in sales tax has caused us some problems. Just recently my husband had to switch our car registration from Pennsylvania to New York. Because of a law about the New York sales tax, my husband left the DMV in a huff. I have never thought of my husband as a hothead, but apparently in this situation he was.

When he went into change the registration, he was in for a surprise. The person behind the counter told him that because the New York sales tax was higher than Pennsylvania, he would have to pay the difference before he could register his car in New York. Even though the difference was only 2%, it was a lot more money than he had with him. He said that he had bought the car in Pennsylvania and it was not fair that he had to pay New York sales tax on a car that was already purchased. Though I agree with him on this, we still had to get our car registered. His ranting was not going to change the law at that moment one bit.

I do wonder about the ethics of this. When I buy clothing in Pennsylvania, I do not have to pay New York sales tax to bring it back into the state. I know clothing is different than a car, but it is the same principle. We did not necessarily buy the car in Pennsylvania just to save on New York sales tax, but that was just how it worked out. When they told him he had to pay tax on a car he did not buy in New York, he became livid. What he did after that was to register the car in Pennsylvania yet again. Next year though, when registration comes up, he will have to bite the bullet and pay the difference.

I have always wondered why New York sales tax is higher than Pennsylvania. Though I realize New York City is part of our state, but you would think it would generate enough revenue due to the amount of people who live there. I know that perhaps the events in September 2001 have added some extra cost to New York State’s budget, but the New York sales tax was higher than Pennsylvania even before this occurred. I do have to admit that the roads in New York State seem to be in better condition than those in Pennsylvania, and that there are some benefits you can get in New York that Pennsylvania does not offer. Perhaps this explains the difference in the sales tax.

Recently my husband and I attend a formal fund raising event for our church. The evening included drinks and appetizers followed by a dinner. The evening also included a performance by a renowned string quartet. The event was advertised as a formal event and the tickets were quite expensive. We live in a small resort town in the lakes area of our state. Because we are a resort area the dress tends to be very casual. The organizers for the fund raiser did not want casual attire so they emphasized that this was to be a formal event during their promotions.

My husband and I are strong supporters of our church so we decided that we would attend the event. I wore one of my cocktail dresses and my husband wore a suit. When we drove into the parking lot of where the event was being held I could not believe the clothes that I was seeing. Many of the women had on cocktail dresses, but some had on formal gowns. Others had on dresses that must have been worn as a bridesmaid dress at one point. One group of women had on a mixture of old bridesmaid dresses and prom dresses. They each wore a hat and several also had feather boas. I told my husband that I felt like I was going to a Halloween party rather than a formal event.

As we approached the door two of the women that were involved in organizing the event were greeting people. They were both tastefully dressed in cocktail dresses. They were visibly upset over the group that had arrived in the strange formal attire. One of the organizers is a friend of mine. We went to a secluded area so she could rant for a few minutes. She had tried so hard to promote a nice social event and she felt that the group of women were mocking her. I tried to tell her that they were the ones that looked out of place.

I also reminded her that even though the people that come to our resort area have a great deal of money, many of the local people, who are members of the church, have low paying jobs. These women most likely could not afford to buy cocktail dresses to wear for one evening. The group of women drew a great deal of attention. They also seemed to have a great deal of fun. As the evening progressed people enjoyed the drinks, food and music. By the end of the evening it did not seem to matter if you were in cocktail dresses or old formals. When the one organizer continued to complain about the group of women, I reminded her that they had paid the price for the tickets and they had not worn jeans.

Technology has made drastic changes in the equipment that we use, and the materials that it is made of.  Space-age fabrics, futuristic building materials, and other innovations have changed everything.  In all areas of life, from how we build our buildings, to how we communicate, to how we enjoy recreation.  The newest materials have made all the difference.  Yet in some areas, the old standbys are the best.  I would never go anywhere without my smart wool socks.

As a professional travel writer and avid hiker, I have tried almost every sock available.  I’ve tried socks made from materials the names of which you could not even pronounce.  But honestly, a pair of knee high wool socks is better than anything else I have found.  No one who has not hiked for extended periods of time can really understand how much difference socks make, but after a day or two camping in the rain and the snow, almost everyone figures it out. Although smart wool socks are much too hot for the summer, when it is wet and cold, they can make all the difference.

Many people think that just because they are wearying outdoor men’s wool socks, they have to have drab and boring footwear. In reality, however, there are plenty of pairs of smart wool socks.  I have some gold toe socks made from some of the smoothest wool that I have ever felt.  The texture is almost as comfortable as cotton, and does much better in the wet and the cold.  And they are such smart wool socks, with the elegant striped pattern and comfortable finish, that I can even wear them to formal events!

Of course, there is a big difference between smartwool socks and coarse wool socks.  Anyone who thinks that there are no such things as smart wool socks probably has grown up wearing the coarse kind.  There is such a craze for handmade wool socks – as there is for everything natural – that many people don’t even realize how uncomfortable they are making themselves.  But wearing factory made smart wool socks, which are made from a higher quality wool and are more tightly woven, provides more comfort than even cotton athletic socks can.  Best of all, you will find that a pair of smart wool socks is much cheaper than a comparable pair made out of synthetic materials. Who wants to pay twenty dollars for a pair of socks, after all?

I am spending more time working from home this summer. This means that I do not have to wear the office apparel that I have been used to wearing to the office. We live in an area where neighbors drop by unannounced often. Because of this I wanted to be dressed neatly when I was home during the week days but I did not want to spend a great deal of money. I decide that the camp shirt was a good thing to wear.

I had a camp shirt that I wore on Saturday mornings to get groceries and to run errands. The camp shirt is easy to wear because you can button it up and tuck it into shorts or jeans and it looks very casual. It can also look very neat worn unbuttoned with a tank top or T shirt underneath it. A camp shirt is not meant to be fitted so they are cool and loose fitting.

I told my husband that I was going to purchase a camp shirt or two to wear for everyday. He asked me what I meant by camp shirt. He had not heard the term before. I explained that this was like the shirt I wear to go grocery shopping. The true camp shirt is made of soft cotton. They have long sleeves but also feature a button tab so that the sleeves can be rolled up and secured with the button tab to insure that they do not unroll.

At a local discount store they were having a camp shirt sale. I was able to purchase three shirts for thirty dollars. I also purchased matching tank tops to wear under them. This is great for my morning walks. It is usually cool when I start my walk but through the exercise and the rising sun it gets warm. I can then roll up my sleeves or completely remove the shirt to soak up some sun. The shirts are very easy to care for. I just throw them in the washer and dryer and hang them in the closet. They have made an inexpensive addition to my summer wardrobe. Now that my husband knows what a camp shirt is he wanted me to buy him a couple to wear for fishing. They are lightweight enough to wear with the sleeves down on hot sunny days to keep from getting sun burned. I found him one that was made out of nylon material so it will dry very quickly if he should get it wet while boating to his favorite fishing spot.

You may think that camouflage material is only used by the military but that has changed dramatically in recent years. Now you can see it on everything from clothes to backpacks. People of all ages are donning this material and looking great doing it.

Obviously the foremost use of this type of fabric is to hide the item which it covers. There are many types of camouflage material such as wooded, forest, desert and rock areas. The material can cover anything that needs to be hidden in any of these areas. The military uses it to hide equipment and soldiers so they blend in with the surroundings makes it more difficult to find the equipment and people.

Hunting is an activity where camouflage is often spotted. It is not as easy to find game when they can see you coming a mile away. To cover yourself looking like the surroundings, such as the forest or the brush, it can make the element of surprise your advantage as the game can not see you as easily. Everything from the clothes, weapons and equipment in hunting can be of camouflage material. Most hunting supply stores can equip you with exactly what you need to blend in so you’ll have the best chance of success. Of course it’s also important to wear a bright colored vest so other hunters can see you.

Both men and women’s clothing now incorporates this type of fabric into different pieces. One of the biggest fashion styles for men these days is a nice pair of camouflage cargo shorts. There are many retailers which sell them from inexpensive ones at Wal-Mart to expensive ones made by Abercrombie and Fitch. Every type of clothing that is worn now has items which have camouflage material even shoes, hats, and underwear. All types of colored camouflage are used in clothes nowadays. It is ironic that with this fashion statement the goal is to stand out while the explicit use for camouflage material is just the opposite: to blend in.

In certain sports including paintball you want to blend in to the surroundings in order to further your position in the game. Just like the sport of hunting, camouflage material can be used in the equipment of paintball and especially the clothing. Paintball is played in places such as forests and brush area and there are different types of camouflage materials to suit both needs.

Although in the past it was primarily used by the military now the material is used for so much more than just trying to blend in with the surrounding area. From fusion to sport camouflage material is seen everywhere today and is used for a variety of different things.
