My sister and I have considered opening up a gift shop in the small resort town close to my home. There are a number of small shops already in business there. The chamber of commerce is trying to revitalize the small community by providing unique shops for the local people, as well as the recreational visitors that frequent the area. We have visited the shops and have spoken to the owners. They try to have different merchandise in each store so that they are not competing with each other. One store specializes in gourmet foods from the area. She also has a small coffee shop in one corner of her store. Another shop has health related merchandise and also jewelry from the south west. A third store specializes in craft and art items that are made by local crafters. The other owners thought that a shop specializing in special gifts would be a great addition to the town.
My sister and I began looking through wholesale catalogs that feature special gifts. This seemed like a good area to get into because there are so many special gifts to choose from in a wide range of prices. We did not know if we should concentrate on one theme, or if we should try to keep our merchandise in a certain price range. We both enjoy shopping so we decided to drive to several neighboring resort towns that have shops that include special gifts. One owner was very helpful to us. She said that when she started in the business she tried to have a Victorian theme. She stocked everything from Victorian collectibles to Christmas decorations and special gifts. She found that this greatly limited the number of customers that came into her store. If the customer did not like Victorian items they would not come in. She also served ice cream cones in one area of the store, but mostly the Victorian customers were the ones that also bought ice cream cones.
This was difficult for my sister and me to believe because there was a steady stream to the ice cream counter when we were in the store. The owner stated that when she began having a more diverse inventory she automatically started having more customers. She advised to have special gifts in a variety of prices. She offered to help us by sharing her advice when ever we wanted it. She also showed us which catalog companies offer the highest quality for the most reasonable prices.
We are looking forward to setting up our store. It is going to be a shop of special gifts and treats. We are going to have different sections in the store that will feature a variety of special gifts for the home as well as personal gifts.

Landlords and tenants are sometimes at odds. Other times landlords and tenants are very close friends. I was a tenant for different landlords over a period of twelve years and I have had many different landlord and tenant relationships. I have found that the ideal relationship between landlords and tenants is friendly, but distant and relaxed and professional. This is a very difficult balance to maintain, especially when dealing with a person’s housing.
My first landlord was a duo. The two men invested in a house less than a mile away from my college campus and they offered to rent it out to five students. They were looking for female students because they did a lot of work on the house and had visions of Animal House in their heads when it came to college boys. Our landlord and tenant relationship was ideal because we took pride in our house and they were at ease with having girls living in the home. We did have our share of parties, but many things are kept secret between landlords and tenants.
My roommates and I enjoyed our stay and we each went our separate ways. To our surprise, the landlords were not happy with the way we left the home. They had expected it to be professionally cleaned before we left. They even included this in the lease, but none of us read the lease very closely. This is a classic example of the importance of communication between landlords and tenants. If we had known that the home was supposed to be professionally cleaned, we would have had someone do the work. As it turned out, the deduction from our security deposits amounted to the cost of hiring a professional cleaner to polish the house. It balanced out in the end, but it did cause a rift in the relationship between the landlords and tenants.
My husband and I rented from a homeowner for five years. We married and had a child and it was time to move on. Landlords and tenants usually see each other frequently, but we almost never saw our landlord and this was good. He gave us privacy and he only contacted us when he thought something needed to be done to improve our apartment.
This landlord and tenant relationship was so distant that he did not even know that I had a baby. He was pleasantly surprised and wished us well. Landlords and tenants should have a distantly friendly relationship like this. In the end, we found that he put our security deposit in an interest bearing account. He gave us the security deposit back with interest. When it comes to landlords and tenants, this relationship was the best in my experience.

Yes, you know you’ve moved up in the world when you’re using nice leather three ring binders to organize your important papers. Classic, stylish and durable enough to last you a lifetime, a leather three ring binder is just one of those investments you should make if you haven’t already.
Three ring binders are just infinitely useful. I’ve been using some form of three ring binder since I was in grade school. The progression of the different types of three ring binders I’ve used more or less symbolizes the progress I’ve made in life. In grade school, it was paper three ring binders. High school and college I graduated to flimsy plastic three ring binders. During my post graduate training, internships, and first few jobs I had entered the world of durable vinyl three ring binders. Recently I have picked up my first leather three ring binder and I’m feeling like a real jet setter. I suppose after leather three ring binders would come one made out of solid gold, but I’m not quite there yet.
I love my leather three ring binder, I have to admit. Sure, it’s just a tool to keep papers and stay organized, but for some reason I feel like it’s more than that. I feel like I’ve known my leather three ring binder before somewhere, like we were destined to come together. Maybe I’m just drinking too much coffee, not getting enough sleep and need to see a therapist.
In all seriousness, a nice leather three ring binder is a great thing to have on hand in your office, desk or home. They come in different styles and shades, but I prefer the more traditional black, dark brown or navy blue leather three ring binders. If you really want to get the message across that you’ve ‘arrived’ you can get a leather three ring binder with your name stenciled on it in classy silver or gold lettering. My boss has one of these and I find myself gazing longingly at his leather three ring binder whenever I’m getting lectured in his office.
You can pick up leather three ring binders from a number of different sources today. A lot of big retail outlets like Wal-Mart or Target will carry them, and they’re really not all that expensive. For maybe just two or three times the price of an equivalent vinyl binder, you too can own your very own leather three ring binder and let the world know you’re on top of things.

Most people will wait until they have a stable job after college before they apply for their first credit card. Although this seems like a great idea it might actually be a mistake. Many companies now offer a first credit card to college students. They send out mass mailings to students currently in college offering them a credit card with a reasonable limit on it. Some college students jump on this opportunity and before long they have their first credit card in their wallet or purse. Others don’t see the value in accepting the card since they don’t have a steady income.
Credit card companies often offer this type of first credit card deal to college students because they believe that the money is secure. They hold the view that if the child doesn’t pay the debt than the parent will. Although this is often the case sometimes it’s not and the child can find themselves finishing college with an already substantial debt courtesy of their first credit card.
If the college student can resist the temptation to use the credit card foolishly than it’s worth applying for and receiving that first credit card. The reason is that most credit card companies and banks will not give you credit unless you have credit.
Waiting until you’ve finished college before applying for a first credit card than you’ll have to prove your credit worthiness. This can be difficult if you’ve never had a credit card, loan or car payment. Although many college students are carrying a debt in student loans, unfortunately this isn’t recognized as debt by credit bureaus. It’s wise to have built up a good credit history by applying for a first credit card when you’re presented with such an offer.
If you do receive a first credit card while in college use it very wisely. This means making payments on time and not using the card up to it’s limit. If you do charge the card to it’s limit you might find that your minimum monthly payments are being applied mainly to interest charges. This can take years to pay off. Also don’t purchase items that aren’t essential. If you cannot pay the balance off each month than you shouldn’t be using the card to buy anything. Charge only things that you know you can pay for immediately once the bill arrives.
A first credit card is the beginning step towards a lifetime of good credit. Apply for a low interest credit card and be very careful how and when you use it. The card is a reflection of you and not your parents so recognize the responsibility that goes with it.

If you are a business with a large number of employees, you are likely to be confronted by a number of issues. Enhancing productivity is always a concern and you might have your sights set on it. Getting the company messages to all the employees will be another main point and you would need a communication channel to help you do that. Maintaining employee morale is likely to be another area of interest to you and finally, creating a way for your employees to bond will figure prominently on your mind.
Your one stop solution to all the above problems is an employee newsletter. The moment most employers hear the words ‘employee newsletter’ they try and look for reasons why they can’t go for it. Who will create the content? How can I afford the cost? Does anyone at all read nowadays? Why do I need an employee newsletter?… will be all be questions that will come your way. But what if I were able to prove that you can inexpensively produce a quality newsletter that educates, communicates, interacts and bonds with your employees, making them productive, happy workers!
The first role that an employee newsletter plays is that of an information resource. In most large organizations, where there are myriad divisions spread across geographies, employees may more often than not, have little time to interact with their colleagues. Sure, they do and will continue to interact with people sitting close to them or in their own department, but they will scarcely have the chance to interact with people from other, unrelated divisions. The employee newsletter will help draw them close.
Worried about content for the employee newsletter? Well, throw open a call for a volunteer editor and you will be surprised to find how many people are keen to start and continue an employee newsletter. In fact, you could pick good communicators from various departments and constitute a whole editorial team. If you have nothing to do with the printing, publishing or web business, you might need to find a freelance graphic designer who will do the design the employee newsletter for you on a monthly basis. If you want to make the employee newsletter professional that is! And as for cost, you don’t need to go in for a printed version. Make your employee newsletter an online one and e-mail it to all your employees!
Finally, what about the efficacy of the employee newsletter? You’ll be surprised to discover how employees take to it. To be honest, the employee newsletter is a two way communication device. While the management gets an opportunity to communicate policies, change in business structure and to make official announcements, the employees too can find a wealth of benefits in the employee newsletter. First and foremost, it will provide them with a platform from where they can air their grievances. But putting them in touch with their colleagues from other parts of the company, the employee newsletter will enhance camaraderie and cross organizational bonding. And finally, by offering them with some fun and entertainment at the office, it will make them happier and stress free employees. And as every management guru worth his salt will tell you, happy employees make the most productive employees. And if setting up and sustaining an employee newsletter is the way to go about it, why not?

If you are lucky enough to have your own internet connection, you can surf all you like. But for the ultimate browsing experience, you will need to have not just a computer with a good processing speed, but also an internet connection that offers you the ability to get the maximum kilo bytes per second. The best individual internet connection that is available in most parts of the world is the T3 or broadband connection. A connection of this kind allows for speedy transmission of not just information, but also text, audio, video and other media. All of this will be beneficial to you if you work online.
Even in a first world country like the United States of America, no more than half the population has active internet connections. Out of a population of over 300 million people (97% of whom are literate by the way), less than 149 million people have access to the internet. And considering that most of these could be network resources or even dial-up resources, the amount of time the average American spends online, uninterrupted and undisturbed, is less than a couple of hours per day. If this is the case with the world’s largest economy, you can well imagine the plight of several lesser developed nations.
What this means in real terms is that most Americans actually go online only when they need to transmit information. Otherwise, they work offline. This is why the need to download websites becomes all the more important. Essentially, a website is resident on a server that is permanently connected to the Internet in order to make it available to people at any time. Since most people don’t go online unless it is for a transaction, it becomes imperative to download websites.
Since the very genesis of the Internet, there have been a number of tools available to download websites. The offline explorer is probably the most popular of such tools. What it does is to download websites exactly as they are structured online. The offline explores not only downloads the website, but also the linked images, files and media associated with the website. A unique aspect of the offline explorer is the ability to preset how many levels of sub-domains need to be downloaded. Surf offline is another such product that can be used to download websites.
Many non-governmental organizations in some of the world’s poorest regions have also been known to download websites in order to provide information to the people. In some coastal regions of India for instance, state bodies regularly download websites containing weather reports and transmit these as hard copies to fishermen, who have no access and no wherewithal for access. Similarly, in parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan, non-governmental bodies regularly download websites to provide printed reference materials to the trading community who have no access to real time trading prices of goods and commodities. Even in Africa, a number of education related non-governmental organizations regularly download American textbook samples to use as teaching aids in regions where there are no textbooks, let alone internet connectivity, available.
Although most website owners would have issues with your downloading their websites to make copies for offline distribution, there is no denying that there are benefits to some of the lesser developed nations if websites can be downloaded.

Today you can’t go through a newspaper or a magazine without seeing at least one Dell computer ad. They seem to be everywhere! Take your local tabloid, and Dell computer is prominently splashed on the back cover. Get online, and one in five banners is selling you a Dell computer. There’s a Dell computer on a billboard, a Dell computer on a blimp and a Dell computer even in a coupon booklet! Dell Computers today is an omnipresent, omniscient entity.
But back in the early 1980’s, nobody had ever heard of Dell computer. That was because, in those days, Michael Dell, the founder of Dell computers was in college, studying to be a doctor. Of course, like most intelligent youngsters in those days, he dabbled in computers – the emerging technology that was changing the way people worked. But this dabbling was more than a mere hobby and the young Michael Dell began assembling and selling his own brand of computers from his hostel room. These were the very first examples of what we have come to know as the Dell computer.
In the process of making and selling his Dell computer, Michael Dell had stumbled upon what has come to be known as the made to order revolution. The premise behind every Dell computer was simple. By procuring the parts at a wholesale price and assembling them when an order came in, the middlemen in the computer business could easily be eliminated. This was common sense. What was uncommon, was the amount of savings that such a straightforward tactic could result in. Even the largest computer manufacturers of the day did not realize that the bulk of their production cost was going to middlemen. Michael Dell did and it resulted in Dell computers becoming a household name.
Dell computer which started in the year 1984 with a meager thousand dollar investment by Michael Dell has today grown into a multi-billion dollar corporation with a presence in over 40 countries of the world. Although Dell computers employs thousands of people, the vast majority of them are in the computer manufacturing side of the business. There is nothing more than a nominal presence in the retail aspect of the Dell computer business. Dell’s built to order methodology has also succeeded in giving consumers with better value for money as any savings made in part procurement, lack of inventory overheads and absence of a hefty retail mark up can be passed on to the consumers.
And if his ads are any indication, Dell is doing very well indeed! Without salesmen pitching his products, without dealers stocking them, without warehouses distributing them, if Dell computers has been able to able to carve a market share for itself among the more established players like IBM, HP and others, it is indeed a testimony for the power of e-tailing over retailing. And Michael Dell should know. Not only was he the youngest CEO to earn a spot on the Fortune 500, he continues to sit as a full member on the US Government’s President Advisory Council on Science and Technology.

Today with the increase in competition in nearly all sectors, getting a job is not an easy option. While the well paying jobs demand a premium qualification or decades of experience, the entry level jobs seek people willing to put in long hours at work at near subsistence pay levels. Getting a good entry level job is not that easy. Unless of course, you are willing to look at customer service jobs!
If you have a pleasant disposition, a cheery attitude towards work and the ability and interest in dealing with people, then you might consider a career in customer service jobs. Although we live in a knowledge economy, the goods and services sector is the one that has shown the maximum growth. Worldwide, the trend has been towards increasing spending on good and services of all kinds. And where there are retail outlets, there are bound to be customer service jobs.
Customer service jobs are not a new trend. They have been around for as long as goods and products have been sold. In fact, the very first mom and pop outlets that sold goods on a familiar and personal basis were the pioneers in customer service jobs. If you look at many suburbs, there still continue to be shops that sell the old way. Sure, the supermarkets and the malls have all but meant the death of such individual stores. If there is one thing that has kept them going, it has been customer service jobs. Any good businessman will tell you that people don’t buy products or services from corporate entities. They buy from other people. And the more they like the people selling them things, the more often and more quantities they are likely to buy.
This has been the principle behind customer service jobs. Most of the older shops and business establishments did not need to have customer service jobs because any servicing that needed to be done was done by the proprietor. But as establishments got bigger and more voluminous, and the scope and reach of their products and services expanded, customer service jobs became a reality. Today, it is unlikely that any large chain or retail outlet would not have customer service jobs. Truth be told, customer service jobs are what drive the volumes of sales.
Not all customer service jobs are in the retail sector. The back office industry has it’s fair share of customer service jobs. Outsourcing hubs like India and China have ever increasing demands for people interested in customer service jobs. And while these jobs need people with basic qualifications, the companies involved are willing to spend time and money to train the staff in customer service tips and techniques. And those with the right attitude and the determination to make it big, can soon see themselves rising steadily up the corporate ladder. No other industry offers the kind of growth and career prospects that customer service jobs offer. And if you have the three basic essentials of a great disposition, an urge to help people and the knack of knowing how to enjoy yourself doing so, you must give customer service jobs a shot!

If we own or have ever worked in a reasonably large business, we would be familiar with what is commonly known as a marketing plan. Meant to increase the sales of the product or service, the marketing plan identifies tips, tricks and strategies to help increase the sales. But hand in hand with the marketing plan, goes what is known as a communication plan. Now this is something that not many of us may be aware of. A communication plan for an organization has long been seen to be a frivolous and inconsequential plan that had no measurability and was not proven to be capable of making a difference. But that is no longer the case. Today, nearly every organization understands the need for an effective communication plan. Most business owners as well realize that a communication plan is much more than mere words on a paper. Effective communication is as critical as a steady cash flow or even the initial seed capital required to launch the business.
Most organization in today’s world will have a communication plan. Gone are the days when the owner of an organization spreads the word to his friends and relatives to increase his market share. Now a communication plan is a business necessity and like the other elements that go into the making of a business, can either make or break the reputation and performance of the business. Again, most companies make the mistake of believing that a communication plan is required only when things are not going well. That is a mistake. A communication plan is required even to keep the various stakeholders of the business, like the investors, the management, the employees and even the customers informed about the happenings in the business. Being connected to the business in some way or the other, they too will be impacted by whatever is happening with the business. An effective communication plan therefore will serve as the bridge to keep them posted and satisfied.
But it is when times are bad that a communication plan will shine through. It is not sufficient to start thinking about a communication plan when the bad times come along. In fact, unless an organization has a well developed and tested communication plan already in place, the chances are that it will be unable to tackle the requirements of the hour. Sometimes called a crisis communication plan, this is a communication plan that is tested for any eventuality and is kept in storage to be used in a crisis. Some companies face financial ruin while others may see an exodus of their staff. Still other companies may have to battle bad publicity while the political situation could have impacted yet another company. Whatever be the case, the only way in which these companies can come out of the problem and resume their business activities as well as resurrect the confidence of their various stakeholders is through an effective and efficient communication plan.

Many people find an answering service helpful to take calls and handle customer or client needs when they are unable to do so. An answering service can provide a variety of services. Some options available include basic message taking in your absence. Sometimes, a live person taking a message is easier than leaving voice mail. An answering service can also dispatch services based on the incoming call. Perhaps a plumbing service provides 24 hour service. An answering service can dispatch the emergency technician on call to service the customer in need.
A well trained answering service can provide an excellent front end to your customers and clients. Done well, the customers may not even realize they are reaching an answering service and should feel as if they contacted the business directly. This can provide an excellent and transparent answering service solution. An answering service will handle your incoming calls in the manner you direct. You can provide specific information to the answering service operators to handle the incoming calls. This may include taking messages, paging or calling on call staff, or getting additional information from the incoming client caller.
Answering services can answer your phone with a live person whenever you need it. Perhaps you need a person 24 hours per day, 7 days per week to provide a virtual front office for you. An answering service can provide a professional live presence at an affordable cost. If you only need a little extra help, an answering service can provide after hours or overflow support when your phones are busy.
Many answering services start plans at under $30 per month. Some plans start at the number of calls per month. If you have a very high volume of incoming calls, you should expect that your monthly cost for an answering service will also be higher.
Connecting to an answering service, once you have subscribed, can be as simple as forwarding your calls to a toll free number to be handled by the answering service. Some answering services may even dedicate representatives to your account so that your clients and customers will interact with the same group of live people every time they call.
Choosing the right answering service will depend on your business needs. Investing in an answering service can be a positive business decision. Many people would rather talk with a real person than leave voice mails that they don’t know will be heard. An answering service provides a caring, personal touch to your business.
