It is amazing to me how much weather can affect some people. I live in Minnesota. Our weather is a topic of conversation daily. In the winter we have severe snow storms and sub-zero temperatures. The road conditions and bitter cold is life threatening. Often times the weather portion of the news, is the news for a particular day. In the summer the high temperatures along with the humidity creates heat indexes in the triple digits. Most people are used to our extremes and realize that no matter what you plan or when you plan it you had better have a back up in case of bad weather.
This winter I started a job working with disabled individuals in an apartment complex. The week I started the temperatures reached a day time high of 20 degrees below zero. I went to meet several of the residents that day. When one woman told me to come in I felt like I had just walked back outside. She had two air conditioner units running on high speed. She told me she had been having hot flashes, so she borrowed her neighbor’s air conditioner units out of storage. She said the landlord took hers because she turned it up too high in the fall. The heat was pouring out of the registers because she kept the thermostat set at 80. She said the higher heat made the air conditioner units run more.
We discussed her hot flashes and some natural and herbal remedies that she could try. I explained that her utility bill would be extremely high if she kept running the heat and the air conditioner units on high. She agreed to return the units to storage and to turn the thermostat down. The next week I went to see her and again it was freezing in the apartment. She had followed through in getting rid of the air conditioner units, but this time she had the windows opened wide to the sub zero temperatures. She was sitting wrapped in a blanket and in her underwear. She said when she got hot she threw off the blanket. She shared that she has always enjoyed wrapping up in a blanket and the only way she could do this is if it was freezing cold in the room.
I have a feeling that I am going to have a very interesting summer with this client. I cannot imagine how she is going to handle the heat and humidity of July and August. She would be a great person to send to the North Pole to do research.

There’s a new kind of retirement community in Boston, Massachusetts that just might revolutionize the way we approach senior living. Many seniors dread the day when they’ll have to sell their homes and move into some sort of assisted living or artificial retirement community. They love the neighborhoods where they live, and their first choice would be to remain there. But until now that has not been possible for many. Extended families do not care for their aging relatives as they once did, and that makes it very hard for people who need help with shopping and other basic needs to stay at home.
Some experts in the field argue that seniors are better off in well managed communities, where they have meals in a common dining room three times a day, housekeeping at least weekly, many activities on site, transportation to doctor’s appointments, and regularly scheduled outings for shopping and other cultural activities. This is better than staying at home along and going without food, human contact and basic medical care. Many chafe in the confines of these highly organized facilities that often run on a shoestring budget, with underpaid staff, and rigid requirements about what can and cannot be done to fulfill many government guidelines and to make the place livable for a large number of people. Often they promise more on tours for prospective residents than they actually deliver.
A group of creative thinkers in Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood have come up with a very appealing alternative. They’ve formed an organization called Beacon Hill Village where seniors from age 50 on up, can become members for about $750 per year for a couple or $550 a year per person, and low-income members pay just $100 a year, the balance being paid through fundraising. And what do they get for this. All kinds of things.
They have a weekly car service that ferries members to the grocery store for free. They also invite notable Bostonians to lead monthly discussions in the neighborhood. Plus, they can call up the Village’s office and ask for help with all kinds of things, and they pay discounted hourly fees, some as low as $15 per hour. These services could be anything from helping a senior take a dog or cat to the vet all the way up to 24-hour-per-day nursing care. The intensive nursing care might end up costing as much as a nursing home, but the advantage to the seniors is that they are at home getting cared for, not in an institution.
So far, the members of Beacon Hill Village are very happy with the services they receive and a small paid staff has gotten many community organizations to provide discounted services, including some health care providers. And other communities in the country are considering adapting this model to their own circumstances. A very positive development indeed.

Well, it looks like tomorrow night is the night. I hate to admit it but the end is near. I can feel the hot breath of evil burning my neck as the moon grows full. What will we do on this frightful occasion? How will we escape the madness of angry spirits, haunting ghouls, demonic creatures and ruthless creatures galore? In no time at all they will be frolicking blissfully throughout the streets, their sights set on home after home and then they’ll be right upon your doorstep. What will you do? Hey, I’ve got an idea. Just give them some CANDY! That’s all they want. Once you hand it over, they’ll skip off with a smile stretched from ear to ear. I should know, I will be accompanying one of these little terrors tomorrow night, on Halloween. Now, I must gather the costume accessories and flashlights.
We are missing out! Am I wrong here or what? Who ever said that we adults can’t go trick-or-treating? May be I want to bust out some costume accessories and a plastic sword to hit up all the neighbors for booty. That’s loot, if you didn’t already know. Yep, pirate talk. Anyway, it just seems a bit biased to not let us parents gather as much candy as possible too. We need the sugar rush and vast selection of chocolate just like any kid does. What’s your take on this? I noticed that my 15 year old daughter was trick-or-treating a few years back and some neighbors got annoyed. What is this about? Are you telling me there is suddenly an age discrepancy with trick-or-treating? Give me a break. I tell you what, folks have gotten cheap or lame or both as the years have passed. I will pass out candy to anyone who steps up to my door in a costume on Halloween. It’s but one night out of the year.
Ah, the costume thing. This very well might be the best part of All Hallows Eve. It’s sort of a toss up between the costume accessories and the candy. However, I may have to choose the masks and costume accessories simply for escape reasons. These guises offer us a wonderful way to escape our redundant regime. Seeing that it only comes one out of 365 days in the year, I would take full advantage of it. Have an utter blast on Halloween!

I have been working as a buyer for a major cosmetics company for the last several years and I have seen firsthand the shake up over cosmetics ingredients that is going on in the industry. Back in the day, the only standard of a cosmetic ingredient was how well it did the job. Cosmetic ingredients would be made out of practically anything and no one cared. Some people say that people in the industry knew about some of the cosmetics makeup health risks, but I think most of them were actually ignorant. Don’t get me wrong – sometimes it pays to look the other way and ignore what might be an creeping suspicion. Nonetheless, no one thought about organic cosmetics ingredients because the synthetic ones seemed to work so well. How could it be dangerous when it made you look so much younger and feel so much better?
Nowadays, we are finding out just how harmful some cosmetics ingredients can be. Every day, new research comes out showing what skincare products can do to the body. Makeup cosmetics have never been put to the same standards as foodstuffs, and the industry does not have to prove that their cosmetics ingredients are safe before using them. Nonetheless, the skin is porous. What you put on your skin gets into your bloodstream one way or another. It is as simple as that.
Most of the make up ingredient supplier companies a decade ago were completely insensitive to this fact. Those that could sell the cheapest, best skin care ingredients to the makeup companies would do the best business. Nowadays, however, it is a whole different story. Natural oils, cosmetics ingredients that haven’t been tested on animals and organic makeup are all the rage. It used to be enough to look healthy. Nowadays, the emphasis is on being healthy as well.
If you’re worried about harmful cosmetic ingredients, you are not alone. Unfortunately, sometimes there is no way to tell whether or not a cosmetic ingredient is safe. Sometimes, the only thing you can do is to err on the side of caution. Generally, things made with entirely natural oils and fragrances are safe. Cosmetics ingredients that involve petroleum products, non-organic products, or anything where you can’t pronounce the name, may be unhealthy. Although it is more expensive to buy from a small, private label cosmetics company, it may be worth it. Who knows what we will discover about the ingredients that we have assumed are safe!

I have been in the social services field for many years. Through the years I have worked with a variety of case loads. Presently I am working with people that have physical disabilities that require services within their homes. My job is to insure that people have home care as well as medical equipment to be safe and healthy in their home environment.
One issue that seems to be of great concern for people that have limited mobility is to be able to get up from their beds. These are people that do not need or want a hospital bed, yet need some type of device that will aid them from a prone position to sitting up. In working with a medical supply company I have found that there are bed rails available to help people sit up in bed. The bed rails are a sturdy metal bar that is attached to a flat board. The board is slid between the mattress and box spring of a standard bed. The weight of the person holds the board in place and the person can grab the metal bar to help leverage themselves up.
There are a variety of bed rails that include one bar or two that the person can grab. The bars are bolted to the board, however there are several different bolt holes on the board so the rail can be positioned where it will be on the greatest help to the individual. The bar can be placed on either side of the board so the bed rails can be on which ever side of the bed the person needs it. There are also systems that provide bed rails on both sides of the bed. These are used when there are concerns about a person falling out of bed.
I purchased the bed rails system for one of my clients. The bed rails along with a wedge pillow allowed the woman to comfortably use her existing bed. About a week after she received her bed rails she called to ask me if I could order another one for her. She stated that her daughter liked the system and thought it would be helpful to have one for her son who is switching from a crib to a bed. She thought the bed rails would help prevent him from falling out of bed until he was used to not sleeping in the crib. I checked with the medial supply company and found that there are bed rails that are made specifically for this purpose. They meet the child safety standards regarding spacing of the rails to prevent the child’s head from getting lodged in the bars.I called my client back and gave her the information to order the railing system for her grandchild.
